ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Former legislator, Minister of Government, the 'Father of the Virgin Islands Labour Code' and Chairman of the United Party, Conrad A. Maduro, has told Virgin Islands News Online that the ruling National Democratic Party of Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith is the “least desirable party to run the country".

Mr Maduro, in a national broadcast last year, lambasted the two main political parties, the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and the National Democratic Party (NDP) and asked voters to reject both parties and consider his United Party.

In an interview on January 25, 2015 with this news site, following the comments made by VIP senior Member Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) when he told the public in a January 24, 2015 report to his District and the people of the territory that the ‘NDP is the most corrupt government in modern history', Mr Maduro responded to our question on Hon Fahie's comments.

While stopping short of saying whether or not he agrees with the First District Representative when asked to respond to Hon Fahie's serious allegations of alleged NDP corruption, the former legislator and Labour Relations fighter told our newsroom that “based on what corruption is, one must have proof, and I have not spoken to Mr Fahie to see what he came up with…”

However, Mr Maduro stated boldly “but the little I know of the formation and the history of it [NDP] I would say that in my opinion it is the least desirable party to run this country,” he said.

Country going to hell under NDP

In a national radio broadcast late 2014 the founder of the United Party, Mr Maduro, also blasted the current Administration and told the people that “as it now stands, the Virgin Islands are being converted into a haven or playground for the rich, while at the same time due to poor or bad economy Virgin Islanders and others due to poverty are being forced out on the way to extinction. The facts are there to verify this and one of the very proofs of this is the sale of property by the banks.”

Both NDP & VIP must go-Maduro

The former Labour Minister told the public last year that “the fact that both VIP and NDP are blaming each other is evident that the wrong or evil has been done; and they both are guilty of bad administration of government, which causes a need for good government; and the need to change them both,” he declared.

It remains unclear whether the 80-year old Conrad A. Maduro will be a candidate in the upcoming 2015/16 general elections.
