NDP dropped the ball on tackling ‘elephants in the room’ – Sowande Uhuru

While speaking on an intended vote of no confidence being brought by Hon. Julian Fraser, RA against the NDP in the House of Assembly this week, Sowande said, “I think most people recognise that a vote of no confidence is a very serious motion, and potentially can bring down the government. I don’t see the possibility of that happening in this particular case but it’s a very serious motion and I don’t think it’s a motion that should be taken lightly.” Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) has dropped the ball on effectively dealing with a number of important issues, according to commentator Natalio Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru.

Host of the Speak Out BVI radio show, Doug Wheatley, noted that a caller suggested that the NDP had an opportunity to make radical changes for the better with their emergence at the last elections and have not done this so far.

“When the NDP came in to government, I said here many, many times that I saw it as a new dispensation…” Doug said while stating that there were things that had not been done and things that should have been done. “For whatever reason we did not tackle these elephants in the living room, we now had an opportunity to do just that,” he added.

“I think myself, that under this new dispensation, we should be able to tackle those elephants in the living room, instead of kicking the can down the road,” Doug commented.

“In my opinion, the NDP has dropped the ball when it comes to tackling some of those elephants in the room…” Sowande said. He felt it was now up to the electorate to stay abreast with the issues and stay involved while letting their voices be heard.

No confidence motion

Sowande also argued that there have also been a great number of people who have not been pleased with the governance provided by the ruling party.

While speaking on an intended vote of no confidence being brought by Hon. Julian Fraser, RA against the NDP in the House of Assembly this week, Sowande said, “I think most people recognise that a vote of no confidence is a very serious motion, and potentially can bring down the government. I don’t see the possibility of that happening in this particular case but it’s a very serious motion and I don’t think it’s a motion that should be taken lightly.”

Sowande said in his opinion, motions of this nature are usually in response to some blatant mismanagement or something dramatic. He felt it would be interesting to see what the justification was for the vote, but expressed the hope that it was something strong and justifiable being brought by Hon. Fraser. He reasoned that this may otherwise serve the opposite effect of what it may have intended.

Doug further endorsed the fact that the vote is a very important aspect in the Virgin Islands’ democracy and pointed out that a few have been brought in the past with one of the most notable being an unsuccessful vote brought against Cyril B. Romney in the 1980s.

Sometimes, he argued, one may know that the necessary support may not be forthcoming to have such a motion passed but the move might still be taken to make a certain point and to also bring certain things to the attention of the general public. In this instance, he said, having the motion passed may not be the object of the exercise.

“Everyone wants better governance,” Sowande said, “nobody wants to sit down and wants the governing party not to do well, because if they don’t do well, the Territory doesn’t do well.”

I too like so many am woefully disappointed with this government. I had some hopes but it has been dashed against the rocks. Very sadly, right now we have no governance, I'm not even sure if those we put there even knows what it means. We are in a sad state.

YEP, I knew this was coming.....Sowande you never miss a chance to air your mouth, I have always admired the way you put words together to sound like you're making a profound point without offering any real solution, keep up the usual work, I always have a nice chuckle whenever you speak.

I agree with u, Sowande keep up the good work as I cannot believe how this NDP is slowly bringing the territory to its demise. Sometimes I wonder why the premier is allowing such nonsense to even exist, it's as if he's afraid to stand up to Mr. Too good for himself (MW). I am just so fed up with this government as they think too big for their own good. Instead of spending so much time trying to see how they could fatten their own pockets they need to worry about the hole their digging for this territory. They're just like the dog with the none in his mouth who look into the river and saw his reflection with the bigger bone.

If we do not rid the BVI of corruption (including politics, business etc) is surely going to accelerate the country to a failed state status should we keep the NDP after Thursday

I made a comment on the pro government web site the other day and they choose not to post it. I thought I had a right to my opinion also. I will briefly say it here. We have members who are running this country who are from a secret society and look out for each others purse. NDP or VIP is all the same but those who have the purse is who control. So people like Sowande will always be free to debate these secret society guys actions but at the end of the day WE are looking for members who understand what controlling the economy is all about. More to come soon. VINO good job.

It is certainly disheartening when you come home from a long, hard day at work and have to 'put up with' knowing the NDp will be there for another two years

Well stay at work 24 hours then!! I hope that you are most productive there...yeah right!!! Talking stupidness. The NDP has this place how it is? Or it is us the people who want to beg and beg and because the politicians trying now to steer us in the course, you all upset. The economic situation is rough for all, but we pick at every proposal put forth by the Government and then want to chat shyte, and not offer any real solutions. Pure posha!!
