ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Taxi drivers and tour operators may not be too pleased to hear that Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has made the decision to remove one of its large cruise ships, Norwegian Getaway, from its Miami base for the 2017 summer months.

This means that there would be a reduction in calls to the Virgin Islands (VI) during that period.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings CEO Frank J. Del Rio made the disclosure recently to Travel Weekly, saying that the company’s “lofty” expectations for the Caribbean this summer have not been met, one factor in revising expectations downward for the rest of the year.

“In a conference call to discuss second-quarter results last week, Norwegian lowered its guidance for second-half earnings and said it will not make its previously forecast goal of earning $5 a share in 2017,” Travel Weekly reported.

It’s not working out

NCL noted that a big part of the problem is lower demand for European cruises by North Americans due to geopolitical factors, however, it surprisingly said that keeping two big new ships, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Getaway, in Miami for the summer has not worked out.

“Today is not a happy day at Norwegian headquarters for obvious reasons,” Del Rio said. “We had to reset expectations based on the current booking environment.”

Although yields are still up in the Caribbean from last year by mid-single digits, Del Rio said strong pricing growth did not fully materialise.

As a result, in 2017 Norwegian Getaway will be deployed on Baltic itineraries for the summer months. “It’s a recognition that high expectations just aren’t being met,” Del Rio said, “almost exclusively due to heavy concentration of inventory during the weak period.”

Slight reduction in VI visits

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Lytle, the Public Relations Coordinator of Norwegian Cruise Line, told Virgin Islands News Online that the Virgin Islands itinerary will be affected by the decision to take Norwegian Getaway out of the Caribbean route.

“There will be a slight reduction in BVI visits during the 2017 summer months, however, Norwegian Escape will continue to alternate her Western and Eastern Caribbean itineraries,” Lytle said.

Lord have mercy. Where are the Cruise Ships that were supposed to be coming here everyday in the week. So far if we see one a week we see a lot.. Now traffic has declined at the airport but they are hell bent on expanding the airport. We have a set of blind mice leading our little territory.

Is this place full of fools? There was never supposed to be daily ships in the summer months. Why comment on what you have no knowledge of?

Expand the cruise pier and they will come calling. Expand the airport and they will come calling. Really? Is that how the real world works? We done bankrupt so we will bankrupt ourselves further by investing in a pie in the sky airport expansion. Where are the guarantees from the airlines that they will fly here? If they do will the passenger loads be sufficient to maintain the airport? What will be the cost comparisons to nearby St. Thomas? As we will be competing with them. Ok so you invested 7 million dollars in BVI Airways only to expand the airport to allow for bigger airlines to come in and run them out of the market?

NDP is a major disappointment. Not only do they lack transparency in their governance but they lack vision and a poor managers of the people's purse. What is just as disconcerting is the greediness of the contractors who only see their self interest over the country's best interest.

@ voice of the voiceless.....now your conversation is the level of dialogue that is needed in this territory; you have an understanding of the dilemma we are in(big ideas with no vision)....

Why is anyone surprised? Claude Co****t Cline did promise 52 weeks of ships a year. Which he meant 1 ship a week.

I have been telling that for months. There are several websites where you can get statistics on ship movements for yourself. There wont be more visits until November. NCL Breakaway was only an occasional visitor anyway.

We boasting about tourism but do we have for them to experience and see. Yes we have white sandy beaches but we have no attractions, nothing of interest. Everyone shouting yeah bring the tourists but everyone just selling what they can and don't realize you have to have something that makes them want to come back. There are a few people who have vision (paint ball, zipline etc, but they cant do it alone it has to be a joint effort and marketed as a tourism product in conjunction with the tourist board. Everyone just set up shop and waiting for the tourist dem to buy, these are times when they are spending very little, we cant blame them. a lot of people think that the people under the tents were making money so they wanted to stop that and get a piece but I'm sure they realize its not worth it and there is not enough to go around. They are not spending money here, especially when to already shopped in St. Marten and St. Thomas. And to add paid to injury, everyone selling the same stuff, and when someone ventures to do something different everyone does it. I lie

Hindsight is always 20/20.... I submit money spent on cruise pier and the wall around the high school along with the purposed air port project should have gone to educate the youth of this territory.....my burning question(what is the purpose of developing these infurstructures and our People not being educated enough to play vital roles; dont get me wrong development is a must BUT who are you developing for; without fully focusing on education

No need to cry! Norwegian signed a guarantee for numbers! If they bring less, then less tourists for everyone to diss. before deals were done and houses built and contracts given to those who 'earnt' them, the guarantees would have more than covered the costs. Now overspends and failure to complete the deal on BVIPA side means that the guarantees no longer enforceable so perhaps it is time to cry. But in a democracy you get what you voted for....

Lord what are we to do now . Nlc is the only ship that makes us money at the moment. The staff at tpp treats us like prisoners. If the public only knows what we go through.
