ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- National sailor Daniel Petrovic took to Facebook recently, expressing his disgust at being a victim of theft on several occasions.

Such was his frustration that Petrovic went as far to state that he was “disgusted with the BVI.”

According to the young sailor, he moved to Tortola in 1997 when he was a few days old and has lived here ever since.

“I am a Belonger. I sail for the BVI and represent the BVI worldwide, working my @$$ off to make sure the BVI gets a good reputation. I am such a supporter of where I come from my nickname even includes the word "tola" in it.”

According to him, this is why he is completely disgusted by the amounts of theft that has occurred to him alone in the past few weeks. “Because I love where I am from so much every penny I earn goes towards my sailing career to further get the BVI out there. This means at the beginning of the summer I had a total of $300 to my name. I then spent all that to buy a boyanciade (lifejacket) which is very expensive and very nice with BVI, the BVI flag, and my last name on it. Just weeks ago this was stolen.”

Outboard engine allegedly stolen

Further commenting on the public forum, BVI Community Board on June 20, 2016, Petrovic said: “Today I get home from working and my outboard motor is gone. This is the outboard motor that I have spent months looking for and only just two weeks ago finally found a suitable motor that I need to be able to train. The hull for the outboard was given to me for free and is falling apart, I removed the outboard and put it in my garden because I thought that would be safer, however this was not the case.”

Disgusted with VI

Petrovic said he has lived in the VI, the US Virgin Islands, and the USA and he has never been so disgusted with a country.

“I am appalled by how disgusting this act is. I now have no money, no engine, no way to remain safe on the water as I train and have essentially started over. Not very encouraging at all. I feel as if the BVI has never been such a sh*tty place as it is now.”

Petrovic concluded by stating that he hopes whoever is stealing from him reads his post “and realises I am not a privileged white kid, instead I am someone who has been working his @$$ off his entire life to try and give the BVI a good a name. This has to stop, I cannot believe that the time may come where I do not want to live in such a place anymore. Take me back to even as soon as ten years ago when I never even locked my house door.”

The Facebook post had received 236 likes as of 10: 00A.M. today, July 24, 2016 with many offering their support and sympathy to Petrovic’s plight.

While some said such acts occur in many other countries, others condemned the thefts and encouraged the young sailor to not be depressed but to continue working towards his goals in sailing.

I feel his pain. But we are all victims of theft and it angers me too. But why is he assuming it's a hate crime of local blacks against him as "privileged white kid"?
The thiefs are usually one of your neighbors and friends. Cast a larger net & he may find who is targeting him.
But it's a shame because we have to do it with this useless police force we have here.

You're the one who's assuming. Where did you see him say or hint that it's local blacks that are carrying out the crimes? And apparently you read what you want. He said he's not a privileged white kid. Don't try to make it a thing against blacks just cause you see that the kid is white. Typical BVI.

REALLY? IS THAT WHY HE MENTIONED SKIN COLOUR IN HIS RANT?
The truth reveals itself whether you notice it or not. HE could've said privileged kid BUT HE SAID PRIVILEGED WHITE KID.
Now wipe the muck off the tail that's between your legs and STFU.

EXCELLENT reply to Anti hypocrite. It seems some people cannot see dark hidden meanings behind innocent sounding statements and behaviors.

      Rubbish,

when was the last time a white person was caught stealing outboard motors, never. You must admit where the problem is before it can be solved.

When you say "one of his own kind" do you mean another (i) BVI international sailor, (ii) another belonger, or (iii) are you simply being racist?

I think the comment is quite in context to the article above. After all the article does say he wants to let the person know he is not a privileged white kid. So why would he want to let people know that? So Why didn't you call him racist then??? strups.

I understand and know how you feel. Petty thiefs.my house is fenced in and someone came into my backyard and stole my kids table set, took all the thyme, rosemary and green peppers out of the planter box. When someone steals from you, you will get back more and they will feel how it felt when it is done back to them. Karma does not need an address or postage stamp to find the thiefs.

DANIEL, KEEP POSITIVE AND ALL WILL WORK OUT. YOU HAVE GREAT SAILING TALENT AND ARE A SMART YOUNG MAN AND THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE , MANY, MANY PEOPLE HERE WHO CARE AND CONDEMN SUCH HORRIBLE BEHAVIOR...THE SMALL PERCENTAGE OF ICKY PEOPLE WILL FADE AWAY TO YOU AND YOU WILL BE THE STRONG AND TALENTED ONE, REPRESENTING THE BVI.

This is par for the course in the upper Caribbean Islands. One of the lures for the BVI was the character of its people. We now have a new BVI, thanks to the laws of Immigration. Don,t fret Mr Petrovic. Many of us, Black and Whites are nauseated by the increase in crime now that the new BVI is a dominated upperCaribbean septic tank. Move on to elsewhere. Soon, crime will see to the demise of the new BVI and its tourism economy, just like the other upper caribbean islands.

the Virgin Islands is and will always be one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Your frustration should not be generalized. When you say $hit like that about Virgin Islanders and not belongers like yourself you are 4k**g rude bouy. Direct your anger at the lack of police investigation you are not received for your loses. Don't be make bullsh*t statements like that about my HOME!!!

    • Chalky (24/07/2016, 15:40) Like (17) Dislike (3) Reply
The "bouy" right to speak out. Older folk will tell you the place is totally different to what it was 20 years ago. The culture has been destroyed by too much easy money from financial services and not enough money invested in education. That will be over soon. The gene pool has been diluted through uncontrolled immigration . You are not alone Daniel, many from the soil are also "disgusted with the BVI". Unfortunately, it will only get worse before it gets better as no one is doing anything to halt the slide. Hope they don't target you more because of your statements, vindictive culture now!

It's because of angry, small minded people like you that our beautiful BVI will just keep getting worse!! You are part of the problem. Change your way of thinking and do something positive!!

"...working my @$$ off to make sure the BVI gets a good reputation".

That is quite a narcissistic attitude, is it not? Young man, we in BVI do not need self-appointed saviors.

My advice to you is to be humble and try to take better precautions with your belongings, no matter where you live.

Humble about what. They stole the man's stuff and he has a right to vent. The F#%<^€g thief went on the man property and took his stuff. And to you all that is talking about one of his kind, you sound like a damn fool. I'm going to say it, if it had happened to a black person, would you be saying the same thing? You all make me sick. Let me catch a thief on my property taking my S#%t. I am going to let my two Rottweilers shred him to pieces.

@TRAM - Wait until it's you they steal from! See if you wouldn't feel the same way!! You work hard for what you have and some punks who don't want to work, decide they have the right to take it!! You'll be singing a different tune then!!

On the contrary, well, well. I had a wheel barrow and and extension ladder stolen here in BVI because I did not lock them up and they were visible from the road. I also spent much of my youth in St. Thomas and visited the USA many, many times. I've had good and bad experiences in both locations. I also believe (believe, because it is up to others to judge) that I make a good contribution to the BVI.

I do not justify the theft of anyone's property. But I do not go on social media to say I am disgusted with an entire country because of a few bad experiences. I do not imply that based on my own perceived self-worth that bad things should not happen to me. Yes, Mr. White Savior is quite aware of his white privilege (or believes he should have it) because he went out of his way to mention white privilege. I advise him to learn from all of his experiences and move on and quit making a fuss. Did he report the matter to the Police?

I was born and raised here on Tortola and I to are disgusted with this place. No one have a right to go on someone's property and take anything. If I leave a pack of chewing gum on my steps, no one have the right to take it. And buy the way, you know who you are. Stop opening my back gate and helping yourself to my grafted mangoes, If you want some, just ask me and I will give you some. Don't just assume that it is ok for you to come in my private yard and help yourself.

@Tram, you talking about securing your stuff, no one have a right to help themselves to someone's stuff even if it is in street view and it is on your PRIVATE PROPERTY. What about this that you don't understand. My husband put a lock on the cistern faucet on the side of the house and the brazen water thief somehow manage to cut the lock off and was stealing our water out the cistern when we were at work.

I honesty don't think he meant to be racist at all most time people in general ; whether a white or black young person with luxuries and immediately assume they"re spoilt or their family have money etc... we are all entitled to our opinions and you have a choice to agree and disagree with someone without being disrespectful....he has the right to express his frustration and anger ..... come on now people don't always specific because if one or two staff at peebles was disrespectful to someone that person is going to say peebles hospital which includes all staff even though it was only two staff that was rude to them. I sympathized with you and I hope you report it and you will get some justice ...thank you for choosing the BVI
