ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Insurance giant NAGICO Insurances has paid out in excess of $720M in hurricane claims according to the company’s Managing Director, Mr Shan Mohamed via a press briefing on Monday, December 10, 2018.

Against the backdrop, NAGICO has also signalled their intention to commence extensive charity and other community services following the hurricane disasters which hit the territory last year.

"Our [community] efforts have been somewhat behind schedule because [of] the hurricane claims," explained Mr Mohamed, noting that being fully involved in the community is something that the company is eager to resume.

"It is also something that NAGICO embodies over the years... We are happy that we have gotten past that effort and so we can also go back [to] doing what we love as well."

Giving back

"[we are] quite pleased that the NAGICO group is almost on the very final lap. The group has paid in excess of $720M and counting so far," Mr Mohamed said.

The focus of the press briefing was to hand over an iPhone Xs Max as the main prize of Ariel Mohamed—his 14-year-old daughter—who has taken on the mission to fill the pantry of the Family Support Network (FSN) through a fundraising raffle.

It was announced that the young girl—with the help of a team of supporters and sponsors—had raised close to $8,000, surpassing the initial $5000 target.

"I want to thank everyone for supporting me," Ms Mohammed humbly said.

The raffle features three draws, and with two already passing, the final is set for Saturday, December 15, 2018, in the compound of the Riteway Supermarket in Pasea.

Life Lessons

Apart from the significant number of families who stand to benefit from the supplies which will be purchased with the funds raised by little Ariel, Mr Mohamed said his daughter has and continues to learn valuable lessons that can benefit her as she progresses in life.

"I stand here for NAGICO and I stand here as a proud dad of Ariel as well… When she told me she wanted to do the project I thought I had an opportunity to also help her to understand the importance of doing projects in a certain manner. The organisation skills it takes, the coordination, the effort," he told the press.

"I can tell you she has realized that nothing is easy, doing a raffle is not an easy project and I have to commend her for taking on these projects," he said.

Little Ariel is also no stranger to community volunteering and fundraising. She has been volunteering with FSN and annually raises funds in aid of the BVI Cancer Society.

Our community is so guilty of never paying stories like this any attention. They always talking about young people this and that and whenever a young person do anything positive or ended up being a Young professional of the week etc I’m sure they get Discourage. If the lady in the picture was involved in so loud ratchet Situations people would have been all over it. I hope 2019 brings a different mindset for a lot of people and for once they take their heads from under the sand. Let’s physically support and endorse our people to remain positive and always give it their best.....

I am impressed and congratulates the young Miss Mohammed on her community spirit and trust that she will continue to put others first as she grows through life. It is very thoughtful of her.

What disgusts me is the fact the headline is not about the hard work of the young lady, but her father, whose first statement on the ZBVI news on the topic was about how many millions his company has paid out. Don't do it sir. I wish her the very best as she continues her endeavors
