SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI - The opening of ‘Christmas in Spanish Town’ was not the usual this year as organizers sought to add new bliss to the seasonal celebrations- a motorcade through the streets of Spanish Town featuring strictly local bands.

It’s the 14th year of the celebrations  on the sister island and as the afternoon of December 13, 2013 grew older the evidently well knitted family of Virgin Gordians flooded Lee Road, the section of Spanish Town where they had their ‘Christmas in Spanish Town’ village well set up.

The section of the street saw businesses, private individuals, groups and organizations with a wide range of items on sale. There was even a play area for children.

Bars were circled with men and to a lesser extent women as everyone grabbed for their favourite beverage to keep them going throughout the night along with the entertainment by a number of local bands including Leon and the Hot Shots, Hardcore Band and ‘It’s a Secret band’.

As it grew closer to 6 P.M. anticipation rose high as many awaited the newest feature for the year’s activity: the Christmas parade. “It’s our first time with this, we wanted to do something new and different that would be an attraction to everyone, for the eldest to the youngest so we decided on a parade,” said Ms Sasha D.A. Flax, the events coordinator for this year.

Not unusual for a first time tryout feature, the parade got off to a very late start. “They would learn from this to make next year better, ” a patron commented. Another said, “It could have been much better but we have to work together and we will get it right next year. It’s going to be bigger and better and the talk of the Territory.”

The parade started from the Ferry Dock in the Valley and ended at the Christmas in Spanish Town Village area on Lee Road.

More ‘new’ is expected to grace the celebrations tonight as a new band is calendared to be officially launched; Caution Band has been described by the BVI Tourist Board as the hottest, newest VI band.

Economic downturn suppressing the spirit of Xmas

Virgin Islands News Online spoke with a number of stall holders at the activity last evening and the view was universal that they have felt the sting of the economic down turn this year. Persons said they have had better sales especially on the opening night of the event in the past.

According to one stall holder, “What I noticed that persons are going for a much different line of items, like costume jewellery, bits of clothing but as it related to household items like decorations and so on they not buying much.”

Others said that things of entertainment and fashion have been the noticeable order of the attractions. “We need to bring back a more cultural attraction to this thing. We can invoke a more Christmas feeling into it and I like that about the parade because everyone was dressed so Christmas like with their hats and so, I think that was nice. And I like the lights that they decorated the fences along the road with. We can work on this and keep bringing and adding new things that would keep people liking and coming,” said one patron.

Christmas in Spanish Town continues today, December 14, 2013.
