ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Kevin Tyson, who is currently facing charges of assaulting a police officer and indecent language, came before the Magistrate’s Court today August 22, 2012, where his mother stood in mitigation for him and asked the court for a second chance and leniency on her son, so she could carry him back home to Antigua.

The mother explained to the court that the defendant, who was born in Tortola, lived with her in Antigua and returned to the Virgin Islands at the age of 17.

She told the court that her son was not one to get in trouble while in Antigua, but has been in and out of prison since he moved back to Tortola.

She added that she suspects his behavior to be a result of the bad company he affiliates with here in Tortola.

In tears, the defendant’s mother told the court that he is her only child, and wishes to take him back home with her, where he will hopefully stay out of trouble.

“To see that he is going in and out of prison in Tortola, I just want to take him home.”

Mr. Tyson who pleaded not guilty on a previous court date, appeared for his charges to be read against him a second time; he pleaded guilty to both charges.

Allegedly, on May 8, 2012, while police were on patrol in the vicinity of Wickhams Cay, the defendant started to shout something while the officers drew near to where he was (sitting on the metal railing at Bobby’s Supermarket).

Crown Counsel Leslie-Ann Faulkner told the court that police allegedly asked the defendant what he said, at which time he then replied with a profanity rhyming with “truck blue”, while pointing his finger in the officer’s face.

The court also understands that while officers attempted to arrest the defendant, he pulled away his hand and ran away.

Mr. Tyson who is 23 year old, in mitigation, apologized to the court and added that his life is on pause and he wants to get the case over with to get his life in order.

Prior to this case, Mr. Tyson served a sentence of 8 months in Her Majesty’s Prison for wounding. He came out of prison on March 16, 2012.

The maximum penalty for this case, according to the court is a $500 fine or 6 months in prison.

His case is adjourned until August 31, 2012.

I do not agrre with your statement REAL TALK you can raise your child as the best as you can and they still turn out bad. Sometimes these kids follow bad company. As she stated he never got into trouble until he reach to Tortola. Right now he is a big man and should be punish for his actions. Mothers do their best to raise their children it doesnt help when in most cases when thier father is not present and they have to work more than one job to suport their children.

Maybe he never got into trouble back home because he know that in Antigua they would kill him if he tried to act up there? Why would he come here to play the fool?

I wonder when the NDP will realize that crime isn't going to go away just because they're ignoring it.

@ saying... i'm not a mother, just a concerned parent who's tired of the break dwn in our society mainly because parents don't raise their kids right and defend them wen their wrong. when somebody break into ur house or assault u, u will feel the same way and disgusted that their mom or dad ask for a break ontop of it all.

Real Talk is right! Do we want the BVI to be fulled with crime like places like Antigua? Do you see the state of some of these islands because of crime and bad minded behavior from the head of government down. Look at how she babies this man and blames his behavior on the BVI. You can see the kind of mind she has from her comments in court.

Just because he was born here does not give him rights here. His mother is not from here so unless she married a belonger he has her status in Antigua not the BVI. There are many people having children here for status and look how this one turned out. Why are so many islands filled with crime and disorder? Is it because of mothers like these. Did you here her blaming the BVI for her kids behavior? This is why this law is in place! He should be deported just like anyone else who comes to live in the BVI and serves time.

You do not know the immigration laws of the BVI, just because he was born here does not mean that he cannot be deported to his mother's homeland if he commits a crime in the BVI. This is not the USA.

Just listen to your self. So when a BVIslander goes to the USA and or any other US country, parents expect their children to get their rights in the US RIGHT? just because their child/ren born in the US. Well same here. I dont care what anybody says, where you born is where you are from.
        • @?????? (23/08/2012, 17:36) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
Yes...because that is the US immigration laws. Our laws are not that way, so when you have kids here don't expect US treatment. This is the BVI. The British and the USA has a good international relationship so we are allowed to enter more freely. People from many countries go to the USA to have kids. Try having your child in the USA if they allow you to enter their country and your children will also get US rights because that's the law of their land ‘for now’.
