ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A number of health professionals and organisations converged at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park on Saturday March 19, 2016 to lend support to the Rotary Club of Tortola’s Annual Health Expo.

The event also drew a good response from the public as some 138 persons were registered for various health checks.

The event was well received with the heaviest flow of attendees occurring between 7:00 am - 8:30 am as members of the public sought to take advantage of the cholesterol and diabetes testing which must be done while fasting (before breakfast). After that, attendance slowed somewhat but continued throughout the day until 2:00 pm when the event closed.

“Most of the individuals registered today went on to do the basic exams: diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol. In addition, 22 qualifying individuals were screened for cervical cancer via pap smear, 42 for kidney diseases with a urinalysis and others received screening for vision and HIV. A new feature this year was our life coach mentoring which was done by Dr Lynda Reid,” commented Vice President of the Rotary Club of Road Town, Ms Sonia M. Webster.

The testings and screenings were performed by health professionals that included BVI Nurses Association, BVI Red Cross, BVI Diabetes Association, the Tortola Vision Centre and B&F Medical Complex. “The latter two also allowed us to use their premises for the event.”

The BVI Cancer Society and VI Alzheimer's Advocates were also present to provide information to the public about their causes.

Other participants

Further, the commercial realm representatives for Rite Way and Therapy Works shared information about the health benefits of their products.

“Ras Bobby, a herbalist from St Thomas is an annual staple and popular feature in the Health Expo. This year we added new features with Life Coach and Councillor Dr Lynda Reid of Kusala LLC who provided one on one personal mentoring to participants and an opening Zumba exercising session with Doneisha Maduro of Save the Seed Gym.”

According to Ms Webster, the Rotary Club of Road Town was proud to present its annual health expo which is a major community partnering and community service event. “This ties in with one of our major focuses of promoting public health and well being in the BVI. Other focuses are Youth and Literacy and we have ongoing activities which promote these areas.”

President of the club, Mr Ryan Geluk said: “This project is another excellent example of the Rotary Club of Road Town's continued efforts on proactive management of health, literacy and disaster risk reduction within the BVI community.”

Why people in the BVI like to compete against each other.? This is Red cross thing. Rotary should give Red Cross the support and let them pull it off.. Or do it jointly. But to cross over and take over. I can't agree with that. I'm not a member of red cross. Just don't like it.

Some Virgin Islanders, especially men, seek medical care mostly in urgent situations. Many do not engage in preventative care. But that seems to be gradually changing. The sponsors of the health fair is providing an important community service . Preventative medical care is vital and comes with many benefits, eg, 1)detecting conditions in their incipient stages, 2)improve the overall general health of individuals/national health by being able to treat conditions at early stages, 3) lessen burden on medical system, 3) reduce insurance cost, 4) reduce overall medical cost to individual and territory, 5)extend and improve the overall quality of life......etc. In principle, preventative medical care is similar to preventative maintenance on a car or on roads.
