ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – When the BVI Cancer Society (BVICS) took the conscious decision to spread awareness by participating in this year’s Festival Parade they were going to be thankful if they would have touched the heart of just one person.

They first got a big surprise when they received a phone call on the night of the award and closing ceremony of Festival indicating that they had won the 3rd place prize for the sloop category. But there was a further blessing that was coming their way.

When President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria A. Fahie received a call from a 24 year old man from Virgin Gorda, Hubert A. Lennard, better known as Akeem, she was moved by emotion when he told her of an artistic business venture of his from which he will be donating 50% of the proceeds to the BVICS.

“I wanted to find a way to support Cancer Society because every dollar counts,” said Mr Lennard.

Contacted for details of what actually this initiative was, Mr Lennard told this news site that he felt compelled to do something from his little bits for the BVICS as several persons close to his heart have over the years been affected by the chronic condition. “Some beat it, some still fighting it and some lost the battle to it,” he said, adding that because of this he has always had a heart for persons because he sees daily the dent it puts in the pocket to fight the disease.

Mr Lennard will be producing custom made cancer ribbons for sale, not the everyday type that persons are regularly seen wearing but ones that are unique. “I own a business where I do concrete and recycle glass bottles. I was looking at some new molds to get and I came across the awareness ribbon mold. So then I decided to contact the Cancer Society and let them know that I would like to support them,” he said.

He will be making stepping stones or plaques for sale at $30 each. They would be done to the specification of customers’ requests. He said that he is aware that there are various types of cancers and each type has a specific colour. “I will do it to whatever colour they request, I will engrave whatever inscription they want on it,” he explained.

He said that since making the decision he has produced the first plaque in memory of the late Shaheem H. A. Richards, a young man who recently lost the fight against cancer. He has since made contact with Shaheem’s mother Scharmla Springette-Richards to whom he will be giving it. “He was actually a cousin of mine... I did it in the colour that represent leukemia, inscribed RIP Shaheem and I have the date he was born and the date that he died,” he said.

Mr Lennard said that he wishes that persons not look at his $15 per plaque donation as insignificant because he firmly believes that a little goes a very far way. He said person wishing to play a part in him donating to the BVICS can order their plaque by contacting him on telephone number 284 -543 – 7544, on Facebook at Greencrete BVI or emailgreen_crete@yahoo.com

He said that he also can accept overseas orders but the price will be upped to absorb shipping, handling and tax costs.
