ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), which manages all public health facilities in the British Overseas Territory, has agreed to increase salaries for all categories of its workers, according to a memorandum dated March 17, 2017 obtained by our newsroom.

It was last month that doctors working at the state-owned Peebles Hospital staged a sickout-strike as salary discrepancies was one of the major issues, according to one of the Industrial action Leaders Dr Craig K. Stoutt.

The Medical Doctors Association, according to Dr Stoutt, had called for the implementation of standardised salary scales, the payment of a standard on-call allowance, no more late payments of gratuity, timely renewal of employment contracts, and the payment of housing allowance to VIslanders, just like overseas medical specialists are granted.

Dr Stoutt had told our newsroom in an exclusive interview last month that local doctors were being discriminated against in terms of salaries and benefits.

Finally a salary increase

The memo stated that “the Board of Directors of the BVI Health Services Authority, based on recommendations of the Chief Executive Officer, has agreed for an increase of salaries for all categories of Staff,” the circular reads.

The one page memo also stated that “together with enhanced compensation arrangements for all Staff, as indicated above, the Board has directed for an increased focus on performance accountability in keeping with the BVIHSA Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct in terms of working hours, professional ethics, improved practices and so forth.”

Not all good news

The BVI Hospital Services Authority has been rocked in the past five years by allegations of poor medical care, increase in fees, late or no ambulances when called, rude and unprofessional medical specialist, shutting out locals from major employments, lawsuits over death of loved ones and low morale of staff.

@ Sunny, It is obvious you didn't read the article before you commented. I suggest you read the article and think before you comment. Just a little piece for you it says "ALL CATEGORIES OF ITS WORKERS" the decision was only made bec it was influenced by the sick out preferably Dr. Stoutt who spoke on the Doctors behalf (my words)

This is a wakeup call for the Civil Service Association. Too much favouritism in salaries and allowances in government. Supervisors getting paid less than the people they supervise. People working over ten years without promotion. Hazardous work without hazardous pay. Maternity leave and no paternity leave. Conflict of interest not properly defined. No whistle blower legislation. And you can add to the list.

Ms. Cumberbatch is in the territory less than a year and she have made more progress & strides in terms of compensation and salary increase not just for Doctors but for “ALL STAF” than what the former CEO and the rest of the management team FAILED to do. It shouldn't take a sick out for that to materialize but that is what Leadership is, you focus on “ALL” not just the elite. That is the major problem and it is owed to the staff and it should be with retroactive pay for the 6-7 years without an increase. Sum are not thrilled of the idea bec they are “ALL of SELF and none of THEE”. There's a lot of issues within the organization that needs to be addressed but the focal and major point is to reassign JS & PMS indifinitely then the BVIHSA will be released from the suffering of the helm of those two who are stifling and crippling the organization slowly.

The majority of staff and doctors are good souls. so, in the long run, there will be more improving and less devastation.

"shutting out locals from major employment" really find this hard to believe ..i grew up in the BVI..went primary school, BVI high school and HLSCC..went away to get my Bsc came back..volunteered at the hospital two summers with no pay and when i acutely went for a job..they told me a local who i knew who was not qualified would probably get the job..hmmmmm..this is the reason why the hospital service is horrible…the locals don't care because them from here and everything should be handed to them because they are "BVI MADE"…..AN OUTSIDER HAS WAY MORE TO LOSE THAN A LOCAL..

Not true. The majority of the people working at the hospital are foreigners... And of course locals should be given first preference...it is their country
