CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI- Others have done it before, who had deep roots in the Virgin Islands (VI), and went on to be governor of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) and Lieutenant Governor.

In 1999 to 2007 Charles W. Turnbull Phd, whose parents, grandparents and great grandparents were from Tortola, was the sixth Governor of the USVI.

In 2015 Tortola born Osbert E. Potter, who lived on Tortola until he was 10 years old, became the Lieutenant Governor of the USVI where Kenneth E. Mapp (2015-current) is the governor.

The boy from Huntum’s Ghut

Now, for the second try, Moleto A. Smith Jr, who spent time in Huntum's Ghut, on the main island of Tortola where his father Moleto A. Smith Sr, better known as 'Bishop', and paternal grandparents were born, will make another run for Governor of the USVI.

Moleto is the first cousin of Wade N. Smith, the VI Comptroller of Customs, and nephew of the late Legislator and Minister for Health and Welfare Ethlyn E. Smith. She also served as a Permanent Secretary with the VI Government in several Ministries.

Mr Smith ran in 2014 in the Democratic primary where he was unsuccessful; however, he believes his chances are “much better this time as people want a change.” It is unclear, if he will seek the Democratic party’s nomination through their primary, or run as an Independent, as he declined to comment when contacted by our newsroom.

The USVI's next election for Governor is due on November 6, 2018. Mr Smith, who is the Executive Director of the St Thomas, USVI based East End Medical Centre Corporation is expected to have Hubert L. Frederick, a St Croix businessman, as his running mate, according to a source close to the campaign.

Both men, who ran for Governor and Lieutenant Governor respectively in 2014, have already started posting campaign materials on their Facebook pages.

Sorry to say, he won't win. Top Democratic Donna M. Christiansen is still in the race and will win the Democratic party nomination. Plus Senior Popular Senator Terrence Positive Nelson an ICM Party member from St. Croix has a very good chance of giving Gov. Mapp a run for his money for Governor and may become the first Rastafarian Governor. Both Gov. Mapp and Nelson also have roots in the VI, the Schulterbrants and Callwoods from JVD are his relatives and Nelson is related to the Grahams and Chinnerys also of JVD.

The same was said of Charles Turnbull when he ran againt Roy Schneider, until he WON. The same was said of Donald Trump. The is that Smith has a very good chance. And he's not afraid to try give it another shot. He's the brightest of the bunch so far too.

As long a shot as a sniper's bullet. Always on target. Smith has a very good chance because the most people want a fresh change.

@round rock. Not to rain on your parade but you are a majority of 1 with that opinion. Most people disagree and the fact that they have a lifetime of success and contribution to the country don't lie.

@crucian. No one really cares about your opinion of the Smith - Frederick team. Most people know that the 2 of them are good people, highly successful, highly competent and the brightest of the bunch. And more importantly, this popularity nonesense is what has collapsed the place in the 1st place. I'll take competence over popularity every time, especially now. We need people who have a proven record of success, can manage and have the people first. The Smith - Frederick team is fresh, competent and the only ones that can turn this catastrophe around without driving the people into the poor house. So I could give a damn how popular these others may be; they are overwhelmingly incompetent and out of touch.
