CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI – Mr Moleto A. Smith Jr., candidate for Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the upcoming election as a Democrat has announced that he has selected his Lieutenant Governor candidate - Mr. Hubert Lorenzo Frederick.

Smith Jr., speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online today April 16, 2014 said that it is his intention to introduce the candidate to the constituents here in the Virgin Islands soon. Asked whether there were others in the selection process which started in January 2014, Smith Jr. said Mr Frederick was considered from the best of several male and female potential candidates.

According to Smith Jr. in a press release, "the selection of a running mate is perhaps the single-most important decision that a candidate for Governor makes. It demonstrates the candidate's judgment, seriousness about his administration's ability to implement his platform and strategic visions once elected, and his level of respect for the people of the Virgin Islands. For these reasons, it is a decision that I have taken with extreme diligence, deliberation, forethought and prayer.”

"Our selection process is based on a 4-part test for good stewardship,” Smith said in a press release. “Part 1, the person must be a good person, who has demonstrated a deep, abiding and unwavering dedication, commitment and love for the Virgin Islands and all of its people. Part 2, the person must possess and have demonstrated good ethical and moral character. Part 3, the person must be highly competent to successfully perform the statutory duties and responsibilities of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor as required by the Revised Organic Act and Title 3 of the Virgin Islands Code,” his release said.

These duties and responsibilities include direct oversight of the Territory's banking, insurance, real property taxes, cadastral and Recorder of Deeds, Corporations and Trademarks, as well as bring additional value, passion and fresh ideas to the team; and Part 4, the person must be morally fit to represent the people of the Virgin Islands in all settings and at all times,” Smith Jr. continues.

According to him, the individual selected as our Lieutenant Governor candidate meets and overwhelmingly exceeds their selection criteria. “Therefore, I am extremely pleased, excited and humbled to publicly announce the selection of Mr. Hubert Lorenzo Frederick, as Lieutenant Governor of the Smith Jr./Frederick Team. Mr. Hubert Lorenzo Frederick is a humble, highly competent, genuinely good person, who has demonstrated good character and moral fitness throughout his life,” Smith Jr. said.

“He is a person whom I've known personally and professionally for 10 years. He was born, raised and educated on the island of St. Croix, and possesses over 20 years of banking, insurance, financial management and business ownership experience, both nationally and locally - particularly on the island of St. Croix,” he said.

According to Smith Jr., Fredericks is a graduate of the St. Croix Central High School, who attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and Finance. In 1995, he earned a Master’s of Science degree in Planning and Economic Development from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Frederick is an expert in business financing, health care administration, commercial banking, real estate, taxes, insurance and management.

“He has held securities and insurance licenses in the State of Georgia and Virgin Islands and has worked successfully with several of the nation's Fortune 500 financial institutions throughout his career,” the gubernatorial candidate said.

“The people of the Virgin Islands deserve the best representation. The recycling of poor performing political leaders has ill-served the people of the Territory and must stop. The selection of Mr. Hubert Lorenzo Frederick as Lieutenant Governor Candidate represents a fresh new standard of high caliber, high competence, high quality, humble representation established by the Smith Jr./Fredericks team,” the release said.

“As a small business owner on the island of St. Croix, Mr. Frederick is personally aware of the challenges and woes facing the business community in the Virgin Islands, especially on the island of St. Croix. The Smith Jr./Frederick Administration represents a full partnership, rooted in mutual respect and service above self first, foremost and only for the people of the Virgin Islands", Smith Jr. said. “We stand ready for public debates with all candidates for Governor/Lt. Governor,” Smith concluded.
