Mohammed returns as Cricket President with bright 2012 in prospect!

The newly elected Cricket Board for 2012 - from left to right - Ivor Fraser, Faustina Baisden, Andres Quow, McTair James, Leyton Wright, (sitting) Shan Mohammed, Daniel Singh, Sachkia Barnes and Dhamendra Paul.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI-There was only one change to the cricket board at the recently held BVI Cricket Association Annual General Meeting with Shan Mohammed returned unopposed for a 3rd term as president following what he described as a difficult year for cricket.

There was only one change to the new Board with McTair James, who plays for the New Testament Church of God team, being elected to the position of Assistant Treasurer.

Also returned to the board were Ivor Frazer as Vice President, Dharmendra Paul as Treasurer, Sachkia Barnes as Secretary and Daniel Singh as Media Officer. Faustina Baisden was voted back as Assistant Secretary and both Leighton Wright and Andreas Quow retained their positions as general board members.

According to Mohammed, 2011 had started full of expectation with the renovations to the Greenlands Recreation Ground being completed, but that failed to materialize despite the Cricket Association receiving reassurances that it would be available for use.

By all accounts now the project is once again on the back burner even though the new Government has pledged it will be completed.

The good news for cricket was that a 2012 season will take place on Virgin Gorda with a proposed start date as early as the first week of March.

Mohammed assured the assembled crowd comprising of representatives from seven clubs that a lot of work had been going on behind the scenes to get cricket back to its rightful place on the sporting calendar and also said that Junior Cricket Development was going well, with a big push expected during the year.

The Scotia Bank Kiddy Cricket Programme and the Digicel Grassroots Programme are WICB Directives with Kiddy Cricket aimed at 7 – 11 year olds and the Grassroots Programme targeted 11-17 year olds.

The National Team had participated in the Leewards/ Nagico one-day competition and although results had not been great there were indications that the VI had some good talent.

With a sustained domestic season containing more cricket, those performances would only get better.

More involvement at the LICA Board level had been achieved with regular attendance at LICA meetings and assurances given that programmes within the VI, including assistance from the WICB on ground maintenance would be supported.

Mention was also made of Daniel Singh’s achievement of becoming a qualified Umpire and the formation of an Umpires and Scorers Association to further develop the skill levels in the Territory.

Good that Cricket resumes in BVI. I want to come to see BVI cricket and also give some tips to the young players in BVI. I heard from some of my close friends that BVI team doesn't give enough opportunites to young cricketers, they just select the old players every year to send to tours to LICA. Please don't do this and give equal opportunites to young players. my twitter account : @henrygayle

Cricket has always been in the BVI, it is only since they dig up the field that none was played on Tortola but it was played in Virgin Gorda, did'nt your close friends tell you that joker.

@gayle.. u r correct 100%, young players don't get a chance and some old people always play in BVI national team. Thats UNFAIR TO THE MAX !!
