ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Mr Shan Mohamed was re-elected President of the BVI Cricket Association (BVICA) at the body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was held on Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Moorings Mariner Inn conference room.

Others elected to serve on the 2013 executive committee are Leighton Wright (Vice President), Joseph Alegre (Treasurer), Sachkia Barnes (Secretary), Gordon French (Public Relations Officer), Kyria Ali (Assistant Treasurer), Monique Selbonne (Assistant Secretary), and Simon Schilder and Bashir Hidar (Committee Members).

Prior to the elections, Mohamed spoke about the 2012 domestic season with the 20/20 tournament being held on Virgin Gorda.

He told members that not much changed during 2012 since cricket continued to suffer due to lack of a proper venue on Tortola. Mr Mohamed expressed optimism that with the re-opening of the Greenland Field the 2013 league could start by April and encouraged teams to start preparing.

“We are very happy that the Government has undertaken to re-open the ground. If the sport is to grow we will need a proper venue on Tortola and we welcome Greenland Ground as an option. We still have some issues that need attention and we will continue to hold discussions with Government to have those addressed. However, we continue to prepare in earnest for this year’s tournament,” Mr Mohamed revealed.

He also expressed the view that the BVICA must focus on the development of the sport by engaging more schools across the Territory.

The BVICA, through funding from the West Indies Cricket Board, has introduced cricket to the youth. There are two training centres or clusters of players with one on Virgin Gorda and the other on Tortola. The centres have over 40 registered under-18 players who will be ready to join established clubs for forthcoming tournaments and indeed selection for National age group teams.

During the meeting, clubs were urged to register with the Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) Board.
