ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), a sport that is rapidly gaining popularity in the Virgin Islands, will see a competition being held on Saturday evening July 19, 2014 at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, according to Dwayne N. Donovan, one of the main competitors.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online, Donovan said that the competition will begin at 7:00 pm and will go for about two and a half hours.

“We have the official weigh-ins at Captain Mulligan’s tomorrow night,” he said. According Donovan who hails from Jost Van Dyke, the other fighters from the Virgin Islands taking part are Daniel Samuels, Rashidi Rodrigues and Julan Brown.

“It is all adults taking part. It basically falls under Rodrigues Promotions which is in charge of Paradise Fighting Championships and this event is the fourth event for Paradise Fighting Championships…it is called MMA in Paradise 4,” said Donovan, when asked about the categories of combatants and about the event's organisers. He said that fighters from around the region will be taking part.

“There are seven matches…so all together there are about 14 combatants,” he said.

Donovan said that on March 22, 2014 he won MMA in Paradise 3 which was held in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands and won in the light heavyweight division.

He said that in addition to his being victorious, Rashidi Rodrigues from Tortola also came home victorious in that competition in the lightweight to middleweight division.
