ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Nights of differing fortunes highlighted Virgin Islands’ basketballers’ performances as Norville ‘Banana’ Carey’s Rider University Broncos lost, but Deon J. Edwin’s Golden Flashes posted record stats in the win over Hiram in the Gulf Coast Showcase.

Senior Xavier Lundy (Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) led the Rider University men’s basketball team with 16 points, but the Broncs fell at the University of South Florida, 70-65, Saturday night, November 19, 2016 at the USF Sun Dome.

With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-1, while the Bulls improve to 2-1. Jimmie Taylor (Branford, FL/Suwannee) added 11 of his 15 points in the second half, while also making a game-high three steals.

Norville ‘Banana’ Carey (Red Lion Christian [Fmr Southern Mississippi]) contributed 11 points and nine rebounds, on 5-for-9 shooting and 1-for-3 from the free throw line.

“It was just a total self-infliction,” said Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett. “It’s not anything that they did. It’s all what we did. In the second half, we had 10 turnovers and two assists. That’s the game right there. We shot too many threes and we just got out of character on the defensive end. We didn’t defend well, we gambled and so you get beat.”

Massive win for Kent State

The Kent State University men's basketball team (3-0) started off the Gulf Coast Showcase Friday night, November 18, 2016 with a home game over fellow Portage County institution Hiram, taking a 111-55 win.

The Golden Flashes scored over 110 points for the first time in over a decade. The 56-point win margin is the third highest in programme history, and the highest since 1998. Kent State had 10 blocks, reaching double digits for the first time in programme history.

Kent State secured 58 rebounds, the programme's best mark in this century.

Deon J. Edwin, who featured earlier in the day on ESPN's Outside the Lines, scored 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting and picked off 2 steals.
