ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Students at various learning institutions around Tortola settled in to their first day back at school with little fuss as the Easter Term began yesterday, January 8, 2013.

There were mixed emotions, however, among the students about their return to the classroom as some appeared to favour the comfort of their homes and Christmas presents over the structure and learning that their school environment offered.

Students at The Althea Scatliffe, Alexandrina Maduro and Ebenezer Thomas Primary all wore their brightest smiles to match their colourful uniforms as they expressed their joy about reconnecting with their classmates, other school friends and teachers.

“I was so excited…” said Kaidija Martin over at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School about her return to school. When asked what her reason was being so excited, she simply replied that it came from the opportunity of “learning new stuff”.

Kaidija also expressed that her Christmas holiday was a happy time for her because she was able to spend time with her friends and family and that is just what she wanted.

The sentiment of happiness at returning to school was shared with many of her classmates and students at other primary schools, although others among them seemed undecided when asked as they gave answers suggesting that they would have liked to extend their vacation time away from the hallowed halls of learning.

One student in particular appeared reluctant to even enter the school compound as he took his time in approaching the gate and unwrapping and rewrapping his durag covered head. When approached about his feelings on the new school term he said, “I honestly just prefer the vacation”. He was not keen on explaining why this was so but stated that he had no problem with what he was doing at the school.

Meanwhile, Headteacher at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, Mrs Marietta Flax-Headley, said “It’s always exciting going into a new term, because we begin afresh.”

She eagerly looked forward to working with the Department of Education and Ministry of Education in completing “the whole package” with the school in ensuring that the teachers and students in particular received the maximum support that could be offered. Her goal was also to assist teachers in sticking to the task as the upcoming term was seen as a busy one for its short twelve-week duration.

Mrs Marieta Flax-Headley also noted that the term included Education Week as well as track and field exercises, “It’s always lots of interruptions [to the classroom] but my goal basically is to help them stay focused and to ensure that they get full [value] out of their planning and stay ahead of the game.”
