CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI – Young up and comer in Virgin Islands politics Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull sought to galvanise support for his Second District run this upcoming elections with a public meeting in Cane Garden Bay last evening April 15, 2015 where he engaged the public and explained his reasons for challenging incumbent and long serving legislator Hon J. Alvin Christopher.

Turnbull, who is running under the National Democratic Party (NDP) banner, also took an early swipe at Hon Christopher, accusing the long serving district representative of being hardly "visible" to the people.

'2nd District on a standstill'

“For me it is nothing more than being a young person, 35 years old, that is a product of this environment,” he said, speaking at a community meeting at the Cane Garden Bay Community Centre.

“The difficulty that I have is that the Second District has been on a standstill for far too long,” he said.

“We have been in the same place for a very long time and I believe change is necessary,” said Turnbull.

He said that insanity is defined as doing the same thing and expecting a different result and this is what has been happening in the district, according to him. “It is time for us to change…it is time for us to change the way we operate, it is time to change the way that we live, it is time to change the way that we move in the second district as a whole,” he said.

Turnbull told the persons in attendance that for far too long the Second District has been neglected and left out, “not because we don’t have any Representative but because we don’t have any representation from our Representatives.”

“This movement is one that is going to harness the energies, harness the ideas, harness the thoughts, harness the dreams of the business community and let us work together as a unit to bring about the things that we need,” he said.

I have plans

He called himself a visionary who knows what the community needs. “I am here to you tonight to let you know that I am a visionary…I have plans for this district and I have plans for this territory and I have plans to move us forward from one level to the next. What is it that can be done to enhance our lives?” he asked.

“For me it is not about having a ministry or being an elected official. It is also not [about] being the Premier. I think that there are simple, fundamental things that can be done and must be done to get things happening,” he said.

'2nd District Rep hardly visible'

The young Turnbull lashed out at the current representative of the second District, Hon Christopher, who he said does not make himself visible to the people on a more regular basis.

“It is time that we the people realise that we are the people and we should believe in the individual that represents us,” he said.

After the floor was opened for comments from the audience, one man asked Mr Turnbull why he was running with the NDP. “My reason for going there is because I believe in the plans that they have set forth for the territory,” Mr Turnbull said.

If we intend to see things done differently in the 2nd we need a visionary leader in the seat who will fight for us and be our voice! Not sit and do nothing. VIP, PEP, LMNOP regardless of short comings either has, the point is when you look carefully NDP is still the best choice for this country! WE VOTING MITCH! THINK SMART

      RC,

What Pep brining....Your leader our current district rep has done absolutely nothing for the district in donkey years. I see why you might be a little over confident though...with all the money PeP going to dish out to get people to vote I hope it doesn't turn around and bite yall in the butt as the people of the 2nd District has had enough. Election after Election AC is given chance after chance and yet he still hasn't done nothing but give away ham & turkey every year....Nonsense!

We making the switch and voting Mitch!!!!

I was not able to attend the meeting but I wish I could have been there just to lend my support to Mitch. At this juncture I believe if I put my high school aged son to run in the 2nd he would do a better job the our current district rep because to me at least he would try which is more than I can say for Mr. Christopher.

So at this point and at this time, there is no question in my mind who I will vote for in the next elections. We have been left behind for too long with no one to make representation for us to find out what our needs are and to try to address them. It is clear that Mitch is willing to listen to the needs of the people of the 2nd and try his best to meet and even exceed them.

I urge my fellow citizens of the 2nd not to be afraid of change. For far too long we have sat back and just accepted what is given which is nothing. I am ready to make the change. We can't go wrong with Mitch. I give him my full support.

Really Good Meeting. Lots of concerns and questions were raised by those in attendance. Mitch did provide a summary of his vision which was awesome and which he noted will be set forth on this movement for change. What stood out for me was when he said, Essentially, we fail to execute visions and ideas for one or more reasons, we either simply don’t have a plan, we fail to execute the plan, or we move to slow. I am here to bring about Change and real representation for the people in the 2nd district. I do not take this responsibility lightly, he said, so on Election Day Make the Switch, Vote Mitch.

Voters, listen to their words. "I went there because they have plans for the territory". The next question should have been "If the second District was included in these plan". When whichever Administration is in power and a district suffers, it is not the Representative that suffers, its the people of the District. Our Leaders should be ashamed of themselves to be called Honourable when in fact they are far from and in their actions do not possess attributes of someone who is Honourable. I am also surprised of people who claimed to be true Christian Leaders would want to support such actions from people in the highest offices and turn around and blame an individual. Even the eyes of the righteous are blinded to the corruption taking place throughout the world. Stop putting a rug on a dirty floor.

I agree with your comment. If the representative is not looking out then the government in place who has the spending power needs to step in and do something but this present government ignored the 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I want to know what happen to the people from these districts who supported them overwhelmingly last election. They just as bad as Christopher.

Its one thing to make promisses and have dreams while on the campaign trail: I personally know BVI don't print money once elected it will take money to fulfill all of those campaign promises..... what took the young man so long to recognise all was so wrong in his neighbourhood....

I was at the meeting and Mr Turnbull said he is not making promises, all he has is his word. If something can be done he will tell you it can be done and will do his best to ensure it has been done and be accountable regardless and if it can't, he will tell you straight up! He also told those in attendance do not be afraid to pull him up on any matters. You see, this is a leader who is fundamentally different! MAKE THE SWITCH, VOTE MITCH

As an attendee to the 2 District meeting lastnight I was impressed with the words spoken by this young man who is willing to take up the baton to lead the people of the 2nd District. I respected the fact that he was straight forward and honest with what he said. Making no promises he stated "all he can give us is his word", unlike what the previous representative did and then disappeared for 4 years at a time . I dont expect him to perform miracles but for me who is willing to see the 2nd District move forward as a collective body, I'm willing to take that chance with my vote. Over the years a few has benefit but what has that done for the collective and the future youths? We the young people of the 2nd District are crying for change and some form of Representation.

Yea, yeah! Lots of glitz and glamor and accolades and commendations. Beautiful, sweet, wonderful, gorgeous, splendid.! I can't stop salivating on all that I read. But this is in no way as glitzy as that of Mr. Cline who tried last year. This is not more glitzy than the man preceeding Cline either. Might also add that Mr. Christopher's resume is even as outstanding as his so lets put the glitz and glamor aside and get to the matter. What are your plans, show it dont tell it. The electorate have had enough of talks and expect concrete information about what you intends to do for the ccommunity.
