ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The BVI Tourist Board in collaboration with local and popular Jewelers and gift shop, Little Switzerland, in the birth of a tradition, presented Miss BVI 2012 Sharie deCastro with spectacular pieces of jewelry to be passed down to future Miss BVIs.

Ms. deCastro, who now advertises a pair of ‘Mikimoto’ earrings and necklace valuing $3500, is the First Queen to the tradition.

The jewellery was presented to the recently crowned Miss BVI 2012, during a formal ceremony at the Little Switzerland store location in Road Town, yesterday August 16, 2012.

According to the Manager of Little Switzerland, Josiah Russel, the ‘heirloom’ piece is a symbol of success, hope and beginnings that Ms. deCastro and other future queens can wear while attending events and other beauty shows, representing the Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, Representative of the Tourist Board, Kevis Hughes said with Little Switzerland being a VIP business partner with the BVI Tourist Board, they saw no better way than to present such a gift to current and future Miss BVIs. “This is something of significance that we have been working on and now is one of the best times.”

He added that going forward the Tourist Board will decide whether the pieces would be given to future queens on the night of their crowning or in another formal ceremony. “We’ll figure it out or discuss it moving forward, with other committees to come.”

He said, with no promises, that “hopefully for 60th [Festival Anniversary] the will amp it [jewellery] up.”

Ms. deCastro, who was crowned Miss BVI 2012 on August 5, 2012 said she appreciated the gesture and is thankful that the tradition was implemented in her year and that she is the first to wear the Heirloom pieces.

Seems like our queen is a first in a long time in many ways; first indigenous Ms. BVI in about 3 years, first to wear the beautiful jewelries, and first to be so full with intelligent and passion! GO QUEEN SHARIE

Pretty girl rock! Pearls are delicate jewelry, they get discoloured very easily. She'll have to take extremely good care of them. Like someone said, "passing on jewelry is like passing on a tooth brush". Yuk!

First of all, who cares if the crown is big or small...its as big as the heart she has and the things she is going to do in life. Secondly, passing down is not like passing on a toothbrush...toothbrushes are meant to take care of your teeth. Its a individuals job to take care of their jewelry to keep it in meant condition. Passing it on is like passing on an heirloom that someone would be proud to have thank you.

"PassOn", do you believe that the jewels Queen Elizabeth II currently wears are any of her own personal collection bought in today's time? Those jewels were passed on from her ancestors from the 11th century going forward. As a matter of fact, this is exactly the way you can always tell those who've descended from "old money" by the jewels they wear. Pearls can be considered exquisite jewelry. I have known of some elegant ladies who have pearl necklaces valued in the six figures and going! Especially, if they are of South Sea's origins! But then again, if you've never had parent's or family members who've invested in fine jewels from the finest houses in the world, and have died to pass them on, well, then, these are the statements that some of you will make in your state of ignorance.

First off, Sharie, you look amazing! You wear those pearls well. Now on to the matter. This is just distasteful! Why can't she keep these jewels for herself. I mean seriously?? I have to agree with what "passon?" said. You all mean to tell me that Little Switzerland can't afford to give this queen and those to come after her these jewels as a gift? Who would want to wear 2nd hand earrings! I mean come on!! I can understand if the tradition is the passing on of a nice jewled broach with a nice engraving or something. I believe even Miss Universe does that. That being instead of wearing her crown all the time (which by the way I think is a beautiful crown Sharie) she wears the broach instead. But to pass on the earrings and necklace? Ridiculous! Someone in charge please rethink this one. SMH!!!

This reminds me of my primary school days, when we had to take back our trophies that we won at graduation, for the next graduating class.

What is a beauty pageant? When the BVI can realize what is required to win a BEAUTY pageant then just maybe you might bring home the Miss Universe title lol
