Minister’s directive for slogan removal insulting- Principal

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Principal of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Marieta Flax- Headley has labelled the decision by the Ministry of Education to have a slogan on the school building removed as- insulting.

According to her, the school was given permission by former Minister for Education Hon. Andrew Fahie to use the slogan on the building at its own expense and it was done to boost morale among students and staff.

Our sources have reported that Minister for Education and Culture Myron V. Walwyn instructed that the newly erected signage, with words ‘The Mighty Mighty’, be removed from the school and replaced with ‘Althea’. Furthermore, Virgin Islands News Online’s sources within the Ministry of Education and Culture stated that the Minister reportedly directed the school principal that the removal be completed before school re-opened today Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

Ms. Flax-Headley said she received an email Sunday night from Acting Chief Education Officer Jillian Douglas-Phillip instructing that the sign be removed. She said no one ever called to say why nor did the email include a reason for the decision. “The school has a principal, and two assistant principals, not one of us were called. The sign is there for a reason and we got permission to put it there. I feel that the department should have had the courtesy to dialogue with us if there was a problem with the sign.”

Meanwhile, Minister Walwyn has since issued a statement on the matter in which he said it is a long standing policy for the Government of the Virgin Islands to name schools in honour of outstanding educators and that the Althea Scatliffe Primary School is one such institution. “The recent painting of what appeared to be a slogan on the school, though ingenious and fosters school spirit, is not in keeping with the expressed desire to honour those who served and the promoting of their legacy of service. The said signage has thus been removed from the school building after the principal was informed accordingly,” the statement read.

“It is noteworthy to inform the public that such a sign on the exterior of a public building should be approved by Government or may be placed on the interior of the building on a bulletin board or as a poster,” the statement concluded.

But according to the principal, the intention was never to deny anyone their due recognition and maintains that the matter should have been handled differently as much effort was put into enhancing the appearance of the school, including putting the slogan, which was intended to instill pride in the students and teachers. She further said some of the teachers were upset about the way the matter was handled and now parents have been inquiring about the sign. “I am appalled and the teachers are also upset. I have been at the Althea Scatliffe Primary for 19 years and the slogan didn’t come with me. I met it here. There is a chant that goes ‘everywhere we go, Who we are: Mighty, Mighty Scatliffe’. It’s just a morale boosting chant.”

The school, located in Road Town and the biggest elementary school in the Virgin Islands, has dominated most school activities for years, especially in inter-school sports. It has an enrolment of about 510 students.

I am an NDP supporter all the way, and will always be, but now that I've heard both sides, I am not with you on this one Walwyn. Totally unprofessional and insensitive. Walwyn, if that is your explaination, that's not good enough. You're not perfect, but in my book that's one strick, two more to go. I am not going to be like VIP LOYALIST AND PETER CRUMBLE WHO WILL SIDE FRASER ON GOOD AND BAD DECISIONS. If you're wrong, you're wrong. Walwyn, yuh wrong.

No she is not wrong for challenging the minister. There is no law that says that because someone is a minister you can't build an argument to defend your case. She is the head of an institution and has all right to stand and defend what she thinks is right. What I think is that it could have been done a little bit more amicably between both parties but she was not wrong at all.

It’s the teachers' job to educate the students; it’s the principal's job to be an administrator. And that is exactly what the lady is doing showing initiative as an administrator to do what she thinks is good, fair and appropriate for her school as principal. This thing also is that she is not doing it on her own, she used resources and followed the right protocol before she did what was done. But like someone said before, this is politics so what can you do?

You see Myron in his statement still have not got it???? the issue for the people is the heavy-handedness of Myron and the unprofressinal way he went abou this. Asking them to send her an e-mail on his demand is selfish. Talk it over with people Myron ths is not charlies or the Moorings where you can push around people. This is government. We tax $$$$$$$$. We know you are trying and you out of your league but next time pull the principal aside and talk with her, find out the story, also raise the issue among, students, parents, ministers, the community for a decision. The same way you run the campaign as a one man show the same way you runing your Ministry...brother this cannot last for long in the public sector.

I think Walwyn blonder on this one u shoulda leave the sign there u say u are ppl who been around the world and see things. Have u been 2 some of the great colleges in the USA places like Unversity of Illinois u would see banner say Home of the Fighting Illini these things r 2 motivate the students on campus because of the achievement of the school. ASPS earned the name the MIGHTY MIGHTY SCATLIFFE cus the reputation of the school winning alot of Athletic Championships over the years and have graduated many students with high honors they built a reputation of success. Dont take it away from their almamattars and young ones in school now. Walwyn u say u r for the youth dem PLZ put back the sign. I did not go ASPS but I know the reputation that school has it is one 2 envy.

Many of the Universities in the United States that prominently display their school slogans, around the school campuses, inside and outside are PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS. If you are going to respond on a subject you should know your facts.

There is no insubordination here, don't try to make it bigger than it already is. Some of you ministry bloggers just need to learn the right meaning for things before you jump on here with your foolish statements and conclusions. Do some research! I will defend her in court any day.

Education is what the late Althea Scatliffe represented. The "Mighty Scatliffe" is a slogan, a rallying cry for the sports teams. It certainly can be displayed, but NOT at the expense of Mrs. Scatliffe's name. It is a school, not a club or an association. Have we all forgotten her, or do we no longer care? Has the time for her name to be displayed expired?
    • Well Said (04/01/2012, 09:08) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
Well said Ty- rexx, I couldnt have said it better myself. It is as if the Honour of Mrs. Scatliffe is lost with this "Mighty Mighty Scatliffe" so brazen and bold. Whats more, the sign was typical of how the former Minister governed -- Anything for his cronies and supporters. If we are going to build morale with these rallying cries and themes, why wasn't it an intiative to be incorporated in every primary school.

The problem with Myron is his lack of leadership and professionalism, he had NO MEETINGS with the head teacher....He give no prior notice to staff or even the parents, and got no feedback from anyone on his power centre selfish decision!!!!! Now, truth be told that is the real problem. He had an email sent to the head teacher just like a thief in the night....Removed the sign and have it removed before school open. This was very demanding and I agree insulting. Myron other professionals must be respected in their own rights....Myron there is a way we indigenous adults and professional people do things in the BVI. You are not at the Moorings and Charlies with those set of little island boys with no education. You are in the public now boss.
