ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Expressing his awareness of the evident distance in communication between education officials situated in the Administration Complex and the teachers in the schools, Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn announced that, for the upcoming new school term/year, he is committed to bridging that gap.

In a general meeting with teachers employed by the Virgin Islands Government, the Minister informed them, that by ‘bridging the gap’, making communication between the teachers and education officials closer, all their unanswered questions would be answered quicker than before, and their concerns as it relates to the management of the schools and what can be done to improve the quality of education with such little resources, can be addressed.

“I am committed to bridging the gap between what goes on over at the Administration Complex and what actually happens on the campuses of the territory’s schools.”

Hon. Walwyn stated that he spoke to officials at the Department of Education and has asked them to make a special effort to be more in touch with the schools and have a report for him weekly.

The Minister said that the accomplishments of the students should always be celebrated but “we should also celebrate those that make our students great.”

Beginning this year, the Ministry and Department of Education will be presenting teachers' appreciation awards to recognize the territory’s most outstanding educators and top schools.

“I hope these awards inspire friendly competition between all of our schools and yes, even our educators.”

The entire human resource unit in the department needs to be cleaned. There is no confidentiality in that department and until that I fixed most teachers will never open up to them.

All is well in raising the educational standards here and I applaud the Minister for his efforts; my only concern is the practice of nepotism in the schools, in particular E**s A***s Primary School. I am hoping that the Minister has addressed the situation up at that school; because I would hate to have to be faced with that problem with my child.
