ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- When the National Democratic Party (NDP) won its first general election in 2003-2007 it was because it told the people that the then ruling Virgin Islands Party (VIP) was mismanaging the people’s money.

The people brought the theory and in 2003 voted out the VIP on the premise that a group of businessman was better equipped to manage the taxpayers’ money and bring about fiscal responsibility.

One of their supporters, who also was an NDP candidate Quito Rymer, even sang a song on the so called ‘Millions and Millions and Millions and more’ that was allegedly wasted by the VIP headed by former Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Ralph T. O’Neal OBE.

NDP tricked the people?

It turned out to be a scam as the NDP had started their reckless spending from its first administration. After the election of 2007-2011 the people chased the NDP out of Office in a landslide, with the VIP gaining 10 seats, 1 independent who sat with government and the NDP had two seats, that of Premier Dr D. Orlando Smith- an At Large Representative- and Dr Kedrick D. Pickering (R7).

In the 2011 elections, again the marketing arm of the NDP sold the same theory that the VIP was on a spending spree and that only an NDP government could adequately manage their money. They also sold in 2011 to the people that the Biwater purchase agreement to bring 24 hour water to residents on Tortola was bad and it was millions of taxpayers’ dollars going out of the Virgin Islands.

The public brought the information and voted out the VIP. The first order of business for the NDP in 2011 after taking office was to lie to the people that the VIP had left the country broke. However, in a series of questions asked by the VIP Opposition, practically Hons Julian Fraser RA (R3) and Andrew A. Fahie (R1), it was unearthed that the Treasury was full of money and in fact the Reserve and Consolidated Funds had over a $160 Million dollars and would have been more once the money from the Financial Services Commission had been credited to the Treasury.

NDP left country broke is a fact!

Once that “VIP left country broke Lie” could no longer sell, the NDP then blamed their financial mismanagement on the bad global economy.

During the first administration [2011-2015] there were millions and millions reportedly wasted or overspent on the Georgie Hill Road on the main island of Tortola.

In addition, millions and millions were spent on the Craft Alive project by the Minister of Communications and Works Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) and to date we are not aware of the full cost.

It was also unearthed that the Ports Development Project reached closed to $90 million while still incomplete when the public was told it would only cost between $50 to $55 million.

It was also discovered that the controversial Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn spent over $1M on a small wall around the Elmore Stoutt High School. To justify the reckless spending, he said it was for security purposes, when in fact a small child can jump the wall.

It was even more embarrassing when after such spending it was discovered that there was no supplies for schools, or money for the additional 12th grade.

Recently, it was reported that the Minister for Natural Resources and Labour spent some $5M on the airport runway extension and not a rock has moved.

Further Dr Smith, the Minister of Finance, has already given $5M to a defunct BVI Airways and to date no one knows if the company would ever fly. The same BVI Airways owes the BVI Airports Authority some $99 thousand dollars but still is able to get our tax dollars. When the little man owes government money, for example Social Security, he cannot get a contract from some public sector agencies.

Reckless or not?

In addition, there were millions and millions spent on consultants for every Ministry, travel around the globe most often with no reports and other many petty contracts that Hon Fahie described as “questionable spending”.

Hon Fahie also declared that the NDP has lost their credibility to lecture him or anyone on financial management of the Territory’s monies.

In addition, it was revealed that following the 2015 election the NDP left the country broke. This they admitted in an answer to a question that there were only had $30M in the Treasury, a fall off from the $90M the VIP left.

I don't think it reckless spending; I think it is simply a strategic way of dispersing our tax money to affiliates and their elite circle of friends: most of the projects associated with the handing out your tax money is still not completed.....my personal opinion

People here only talk. Soft like toilet paper. You can run over them anyhow-which-way you like, they still would do nothing. Then they turn around and want to take out their pinned-up stress on the island people. NDP already know their number. One set a crying to comfort themselves before they go to bed. Protest you say; it doesn't even worth your time posting anything with any sense for these people. Allow them to continue taking their licks and crying themselves to sleep.

@ its time to protest: leave that protest thing alone because on the date scheduled for the protest; chances are you will be only person in that protest line....I can recall the protest days of the 70s & 80s BUT those days are gone(sad to say because unity is strength and there is no more solidarity in the VI)....

People in the community seek help to run the country so they turn to the business men or the rich thinking they know what is best, but the rich didn't get rich by helping others or making the poor wealthy, and the business man doesn't do business with a heart, think about it. There is an upper class, a middle class, and a lower class now most of them in the upper class look down upon the other classes and they would NEVER try to bring someone up a class to be on the same level with them. While it's true they might speak to you nicely in person but they would never think of you as their equal or help you to become their equal. So our worries, stress and problems could never be theirs because they don't hear it or see it and even if they could, they don't live it so fixing our problems is not their concern. In fact they try to keep the classes as they are so they can always be on top, think about it? they might say we are going to help you, but look at what they have done: increase fees and bills, introduce new fees, bills, policies, rules, laws and spend more money than they are making on projects they can't complete. Now lets look at what they have not done: they don't want to increase minimum wage, they don't want to regulate rent, fees and bills. So have they really been helping you? they are not even aware or even care how the things they do affect you, the cost of living is high but they don't see it or feel it because they have money to waste and your tax money backing them too. Then there is the consultants, they pay consultants money they would never consider giving you, but wait we hired them to run the country but they hire people from away with no interest in the country and pay them your hard earned tax money to tell them how to run the country. So tell me again why didn't we just hire consultants to run the country instead of the middle men?

I have thought about this and this is my conclusion. These guys know exactly what they are doing - setting up themselves and there allies before they eventually get out of Govt. As the old people here say "they saving themselves". Without conscience or any care or shame they are busy enriching themselves, family and friends of our tax dollars. It doesn't take a Einstein to realize the NDP way of doing business is not benefitting the majority of our people. It would be a serious eye opener if the kickbacks, conflicts of interest and all other manner of corruption are revealed. It is sickening. With all this reckless spending who is looking out for us? Who is investigating where the money is really going? Time for some investigating. A lot ain't right in this country. These guys are the only ones benefitting and their affiliates and in the meantime there is sooo much that doesn't cost a million dollars that is not being addressed. Bviislanders time to stop sitting back and taking all this bs. You don't need election to send a message. We need to come together and hold these jokers accountable.

Unless there's some political upheaval the wild spending will continue, the one hand wash the other will continue, the friend and family system will continue, the scratch my back I scratch yours will continue. There's no one policing the flagrant, blatant and outrageous foolishness that's going on. The people are so partisan that no NDP backer will support VIP call to engage in civil protest. The police priorities is on guns and drugs; they don't have will, experience or skill to investigate these things. What's more the head does not see anything and if he can't see it then it does not exist. What a state of affair. MTA they gave the poorest amongst us a 2$ increase and immediately hike the cost of doing business. Where is price control...Not Here. Where is consumer Affairs.....Nowhere. Who do you call when SLOW start to crawl. Who do you complain to when prices get hiked $2, $3, $20? It is a sad state of affair. Buy tips wha we buy so it we must bear.

What can the NDP do when the monies into the treasury is dwindling because the white boys in BVI and UK are hell bent on making Virgin Islanders 'lil shots.' They never seen black big shots before. That got them baffled, but ladies and gentlemen, horses and mules, NDP is not the problem. The problem is what island will we live on in peace and harmony when companies fooling labour and hiring who them want and our people out of jobs; when their is a subtle racism brewing in this country; when many do not know the past and cannot see a picture for the future. Come on people, let us look at the bigger picture here. We want an island where we are kings and queens, not clandestine slaves waiting for handout from the Massa. NDP, do better, please, but if the other party that wins do not understand where we should be going as a country, kropo going to smoke all our pipes.
