Mechanical problem forces temporary closure of VG airport
"There has been a series of operational complications surrounding the fire tender which developed primarily after hurricane Irma. These complications have today entered the serious and critical category and as a result, we are forced to take the proactive approach to suspend all aircraft operations at the airport," said BVIAA.
The press release continued to state that it is important that the BVIAA ensure that all airports operate in accordance with local and international regulatory standards and are safe at all times.
The BVI Airports Authority is asking for the public to “bear” with them as they try to rectify the issues as they seek to have a fully functioning fire truck while noting that “safety is their number one priority”.
"The BVI Airports Authority apologises for any inconvenience caused due to the temporary suspension of operations at the Airport. We are doing our very best to ensure that regular and safe air operations return to Virgin Gorda in the near future. We will provide a further update on the re-opening of the Taddy Bay Airport in Virgin Gorda as soon as information becomes available," according to the BVIAA announcement.
Temporary closure not the first time
Meanwhile, the public will recall that this is not the first time that the Taddy Bay Airport has been temporarily closed due to technical difficulties with equipment at the airport.
There was a technical problem with a Piper Navajo N83TA plane belonging to ‘Island Bird’ that rendered it immobile on the runway for a period of time leaving passengers stranded for hours.
It is unclear at this time when the Taddy Bay Airport on Virgin Gorda will resume its regular operations.
