'Mechanic' who damaged customer vehicle facing jail time
Courtney Fahie admitted his guilt to the offences of taking conveyance without authority and driving without a driver’s license when he appeared before Magistrate Ayanna O. Baptiste-DaBreo recently.
Prosecutors said Fahie used a Mitsubishi Pajero jeep belonging to a former customer and caused varying levels of damage to the vehicle’s windscreen, bumper and lights in the process.
Magistrate Baptiste-DaBreo ordered the defendant to compensate the owner for the repairs of the vehicle, which is over $2,000.
For the offence of taking conveyance without authority, Mr Fahie was fined $1,300. If he does not pay the fine, he is facing four months at Her Majesty’s Prison.
For the offence of driving without due care and attention, he was given a $350 fine. He was also warned that failure to pay the fine would result in seven days in prison.
All fines are to be paid by November 9, 2019 the Magistrate said.
I had a key
Before his sentence was handed down, Fahie said he had a key to the vehicle and used it from time to time.
Prosecutors said the owner of the vehicle had entrusted the vehicle to him for repairs and gave him a key, but it was given to another mechanic after Fahie took too long to address the mechanical problems it faced.
