ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Kadeem Maynard, who allegedly ran Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) students with a baseball bat in the school’s compound over a stolen mobile phone, pleaded guilty yesterday morning, June 20, 2012 in the Magistrate’s Court to being armed with an offensive weapon.

To this end, he will be sentenced on July 17, 2012.

Crown Counsel Jude Hanley in reeling out the facts stated that Maynard and Petranella Frett went to the ESHS on June 1, 2011 after receiving a call from Ms. Frett’s daughter, who had her mobile phone stolen sometime during the day.

The duo had a conversation with one of the Assistant Principals and then proceeded to the classroom where Mrs. Frett’s daughter was in. There the pair begun to conduct searches of the students and their belongings; and when one of the students objected to the search a dispute ensued between the student and the defendants.

Thereafter, Frett and Maynard allegedly went to the main gate so as to block students from leaving the campus. The court heard that Maynard allegedly ran to a parked jeep “got a baseball bat, returned and with it started to chase students back inside the school yard.”

A report was made to the Road Town Police Station on June 2, 2011 and Maynard was questioned the same day. However, it was not until August that the 21 year-old was officially charged.

Meanwhile, Ruthella Maximea, Maynard’s lawyer disclosed to the court that her client “temporarily lost his way and exercised poor judgment” and is remorseful over the incident. She added that the Virgin Islander has two businesses – a car wash and gourmet and catering service – which is an achievement for someone so young.

“He almost has an unblemished criminal record…the only thing was a tint on his vehicle,” Ms. Maximea revealed.

The lawyer noted that the baseball bat used was only in Maynard’s vehicle because he and friends had a softball match that day. She also pointed to the fact that no student was injured nor any property damaged.

Interestingly, the father of one made a huge blunder when he rose to address the court. While he apologized, he told Magistrate Tamia Richards, “You will not see me for another four, five years.”

As for Mrs. Frett, she has to report to court on July 12, 2012 to know what date her trial will begin. She is charged with indecent language.

I think if they had an issue over a missing cell phone, the security personnel of the school or police should have been called now that is the real issue

the mother and the child should have been thrown off the camput. I know when I attended orientation for my son going in to high school, Principal Selwood told all of us that any student caught with a cell phone on campus WILL be suspended, NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!! So what this child doing in school with a cell phone and the audacity of the mother to be up there showing off herself

Can you imagine that kind of weak defense from your lawyer? He might as well had gone and throw himself to the mercy of the court. Who ever she is she needs to go back to school. She as a defense lawyer is laughable. OMG
