“Maybe it’s time” said the Minister for Education
The Minister made these statements while addressing the territory’s teachers on August 27, 2012, at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium.
In his address, Hon. Walwyn said that “this is an exciting time in the Virgin Islands and this is certainly an exciting time in education. In this we have the opportunity to truly chart a course for success for our students and the territory on a whole.”
He suggested that “Maybe it is time for us to get rid of the level 40 and 41 and 50 and 51 regimes… Maybe it is time for us to add an additional hour to allow for more instructional time in the school day as was done in the State of Florida for this academic year.”
Hon. Walwyn continued by saying “Maybe it is time to unlock the set program in the secondary schools and allow students to choose their courses across the board in third form, in preparation for the national school leaving exams and CXC exams… Maybe it is even time for us to seriously consider a sixth form to allow our students a better transition into college.”
The Minister threw out an invitation to the teachers and principals to come to his Ministry with their thoughts and suggestions “of what we can do to move education in the Virgin Islands Forward.”
