ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The sheer quality of talent showcased by the students of the Elmore Stoutt High School left many beguiled at its annual Christmas concert which was held last evening Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the Sir. Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

The various ensembles performed the Christmas classics, and in their own unique and masterful ways had patrons in the near packed Hall clapping along and tapping their feet.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. Kedrick Pickering was observed at times shouting his approval at the conclusion of the performances, so was Hon. Andrew Fahie, the 1st district representative.

The Junior Steel Band got off to a rocking start with “Jingle Bell Rock” and “We Three Kings”, they were followed by the Junior Concert Band with “Drummer’s Christmas Carol”, “Holiday Grand Finale” and “Fantasia on Christmas Comes Anew”.

Next up was the school’s choir with “Glad Tidings of Joy” and “For Unto Us A Child Is Born”.

Jazzing things up was the Senior Concert Band with “Ukranian Bell Carol”, ‘Three Jazzy Kings” and “A Jazzy Christmas”.

The talented musicians in the Jazz Band entertained with “Here Comes Santa Claus”, “Deck the Halls with Bones and Saxes” and “Jingle Bell Boogie”. Several solos were performed during the segment.

"Joy" and a Christmas medley then took center stage by the choir.

The high quality concert climaxed with the Senior Steel Band giving a rapturous rendition of “Ring Dem Bells”, ‘Drummer Boy” and “Carol of the Bells”.

Chairing the evening’s proceeding was Arthur Selwood, who shared some facts with the audience.

He disclosed that 90 percent of the students that performed began the musical programme in First Form and by the Fifth Form they would have been at the level of a first year college student studying music.

Furthermore, 80 percent of the music instructors were part of the programme since its inception 30 years ago.

The ESHS’s musical staff comprise of Lelia Burke, head of the department; Andre Braithwaite band director; Nehassie Chalwell steel band director; Margie Webb-Headley choir director and Brandon Powell, Magdalene Barzey, Kyia Stoutt, Lincoln Ward, Ronnie Crawford and Dion Williams the steel pan maestros.
