Mark H. Vanterpool recants resignation, ask to be sworn into HoA

-Cites incorrect resignation procedure, says will place country above self
Representative for the Fourth Electoral District, Mark H. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Representative for the Fourth Electoral District, Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) has today, March 14, 2019, recanted his resignation from the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA) citing incorrect resignation procedure, while noting that the people of his district have encouraged him to continue being their representative.

Invalid Resignation

In a statement released today on his Facebook page, Mr Vanterpool said his resignation on March 5, 2019, would be considered invalid since it was addressed to the Speaker of the HoA, and at that time, there was no speaker.

He said the Clerk indicated in a letter dated March 13, 2019, that he should write directly to the Speaker of the House, Mr Julian Willock who subsequently indicated that the letter was incorrectly addressed—according to Mr Vanterpool—however, the resignation has since been accepted under the Virgin Islands Constitution 2007, as per sec 67 (3) (a) which states,“An elected member of the House of Assembly shall also vacate his or her seat in the House-- (a) if he or she resigns it by writing under his or her hand addressed to the speaker,” paving the way for By-Elections.

Mr Vanterpool said that since he did not write to the speaker originally, he is therefore seeking to be sworn into the HoA at the earliest, as the representative for the Fourth Electoral District.

Huge Responsibility

“I have listened to the many concerns expressed by the people of this territory about my decision, these concerns have weighed heavily on my mind day in and day out. I recognize the huge responsibility and trust that you the people of the Fourth District, in particular, have placed in me.”

Mr Vanterpool further apologized to the people of his district for any inconvenience and confusion caused as a result of his sudden resignation.

"He said the Clerk indicated in a letter dated March 13, 2019, that he should write directly to the Speaker of the House, Mr Julian Willock who subsequently indicated that the letter was incorrectly addressed" Thus the letter was address to the Clerk not the speaker...there was no speaker at the time Hon. Mark Resign..

"the Clerk of the House of Assembly refused the letter"

Thanks Cindy, but every time you speak for the people they do something else.

Mark is a cool cat and it is beneficial to have someone of his experience and standing in the opposition. I hope his personal issues have been resolved.

well what ah ting: maybe the auditor General report went in his favor so him more comfortable returning to the house: the man had two seats set aside for him on 12 March 2019 and never showed up: some people think this life is a dream: the man resigned; as a matter of fact he himself went public with the matter and now trying to be a jive turkey...he can walk in and out one-mart but not government office(was very successful at the political poles thereafter turn around and submit his resignation, no one fired him, he exit on his own free will)....these are very serious times in our territory

Not sure how this whole joke will play out, but if the elected representative gets to remain, all I ask is for proper representation for the 4th district.

The people of certain sections of the 4th have been cast aside by the rep for too many years. All we ask is for PROPER representation for ALL of the residents of the 4th, for a decent looking district and a better smelling capital.

If we can't get it, then the rep needs to go siddung and let someone who is willing and able take over. His credibility leaves much to be desired.

The speaker is wrong ...He cannot legally accept something that wasn't or didn't address to him ..Hence the resignation is void and Mark should return to the house if that's what he wants ..Then again I'm not seeing blogs in support of Mark My friend blog in support of mark . She said she didn't see her blog . Hope he isn't using his media to oppress opposing voices . People will know they will speak . Why I was in support of Olivine as Speaker ...No strings attached . No conflict . Very able and very capable .

It seems as though many people have shallow memories because it was this same Hon. Mark Vanterpool who was playing games in previous years and earn the nick name THE GRASSHOPPER. He jumped from the NDP to the VIP and return to the NDP. This is a man that cannot be trusted. No wonder he is in so much corruption.

The voters in the Fourth District are taken for a ride. The letter of resignation must be examined and if there is any technicality, it must be verified by the Hon. Attorney General and let the buck stop where it should.
