Marietta Flax-Headley to remain at ‘Mighty Mighty’ Scatliffe!

- Principal Sybil Hodge to stay at Ebenezer Thomas Primary School
Principal of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Mrs Marietta Flax-Headley (left) will remain at the helm of the school come the opening of the new school year in September 2013. It was reported a few months ago that Chief Education Officer (Ag.) Mrs Jillian Douglas-Phillips had advised Mrs Flax-Headley that she would be reassigned to another school. Many teachers and persons in the community felt the intended move was political victimisation because of the principal’s outspokenness against the poorly run Department and Ministry of Education. There were reports first raised by Third District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser RA, that Principal of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School, Mrs Sybil Hodge (right) would have been reassigned. However, Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn (left), who continues to come under fire for allegedly playing politics with the education system, denied that this was the case. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Controversy loomed for some months after the popular Principal of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, Mrs Marietta Flax-Headley was reportedly told by Acting Chief Education Officer Mrs Jillian Douglas-Phillips that she would be reassigned from her school, according to this news site’s sources within the Ministry of Education and Culture.

However, Mrs Flax-Headley will remain as Principal of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, according to the assignment sheet sent out to Principals over the weekend.

An indigenous Virgin Islander and a native of the sister island of Virgin Gorda, Mrs Flax-Headley has been at the school for some 20 years - the last three of those as Principal. While relocation of school Principals is nothing new, many parents, students and persons in the community felt that the move was political victimisation because of Mrs Flax-Headley’s outspokenness for improvement in the Education Department and better communication from the Ministry of Education to schools.

Many parents and other concerned residents, on hearing of the pending move of Mrs Flax- Headley, had reportedly made representations to many elected officials including the Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn. The Minister, according to a source, would have needed to give his approval for the move to be made.

It was reported that many parents and friends of the school wanted Mrs Flax-Headley to remain at the school because of the success rate under her tenure. Some claimed they were willing to “march” if the Department of Education had gone ahead and reassigned her from the biggest primary school in the Virgin Islands.

Mrs Flax-Headley blasts Education Department

At this year’s Althea Scatliffe Primary School class five graduation, Mrs. Flax-Headley blasted the Education Department and the function of the Ministry of Education. She told the public that she wished the Department of Education would collaborate more with educators before making decisions since often times those decisions are only made known through the news media.

In her presentation, the Althea Scatliffe head teacher said, “I am aware that our Department of Education has planned to switch the teachers around. My wish is that the powers that be keep this special group of teachers together.”

However, this news site has learnt that in the assignment sheet e-mailed to all principals over the weekend, her Assistant Principal Mrs Orlandette R. Crabbe has been reassigned. It remains unclear if she has now been promoted to a principal of a school.

Some parents have also claimed that the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn has played politics with the Education system and the reassignment of principals. It is alleged by one school teacher, who wished to remain anonymous, that the pending move that did not happen was “pure politics.” However, the teacher did not provide this news site with the evidence to back up his claim.

Principal Sybil Hodge to remain at the ETPS

At this year’s primary five graduation of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School (ETPS) held on July 2, 2013 Third District Representative Honourable Julian Fraser RA, had raised the issue of "rumors" about the reassignment of the ETPS Principal, Mrs Sybil Hodge.

At the time, Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn had told the audience not to listen to rumors.

In the list e-mailed to principals over the weekend, it appears Mrs Hodge will remain at the ETPS.

There are some really broken schools that have not been fixed and have been going from bad to worse which continues to remain unchanged which needs to be looked into.

Aaaahhhh shut the frontdoor, all of you who dislike my comment very well know that this is a wolf in sheep clothing, and @ what you know.. fine she is doing her best with what little she is given from government, well I guess you know a whole lot, but MY problem is she needs to learn how to talk TO people and not AT them, she is r*de and unc*uth, and after that stunt she pulled last year with her son I am seriously surprise she is still there. My opinion is mine and that my dear you can’t take away, so go kick rocks with open toe sandals. Piece out.

The behaviour you described "the MY problem is she needs to learn how to talk TO people and not AT them, she is r*de and unc*uth," is displayed by several teachers at Leonora Delville and the principal continues to push this under the rug.

She have the parent top go and ask the minister to leave there because she feel that she is the best but she is not that good. I am happy the he move that teacher she is a trouble making.

So Althea Scatliffe is doing good so we must leave her there ? We should not think about the other school that are not doing good then ?

It is easier to maintain a school that is doing well. Getting a school from bad to good is where the challenge is!

We do need to get some good teachers and principals to the schools that are not doing too well.

She did that when she was moved to Lenora Delville. As soon as she left check what happen down there. The teachers them were glad they moved her so they could run things. That school need strong leadership.

they looking at ASPS, they should pay attention to FLPS where it seems the PTA is the boss and calling all kinds of shots with some of the teachers. Some teachers and parents think they own the schools and want to run things but only time will tell. Be careful what you ask for.

Shuffling of teachers is needed, but why move teachers at certain schools and leave the ones where you have a lot of complaints untouched? It should apply to all schools.

There's just too much biting and bickering in this little place from some of you people. No matter what you do, you will not be able to please everyone; so please just stop complaining about the decisions that are taken. I am sure that they are in the best interest of our education system. And, I would advise Looking On to complete an application form and send your resume to the Ed. Department so you could be considered for one of these positions too. Halos to Ms. Headley and Mrs. Hodge.

All schools have PE teachers who manage sports at their school. EAPS has great athletes, but you would have to qualify to represent. Not all students make the grade to be on schhol teams.

SO TELL ME WHY MS. HEADLEY SHOULD NOT BE MOVE AGAIN??? MY OPINION TO THESE PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS IS THAT THEY SIGN A CONTRACT AND IN THAT CONTRACT I AM SURE IT STATES THAT YOU CAN BE MOVED AROUND. THEY HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT THEY ARE WORKING FOR THE GOVERNMENT. DONT THE GOVERNMENT MOVE AROUND ITS CIVIL WORKERS??? WHAT THE HELL IS THE BIG FUSS ABOUT. MOVE YOUR @$$ AND TEACH THE PEOPLE CHILDREN FROM STUDYING BOUT POSITION. IF YOU HAD REALLY CARE ABOUT TEACHING THE TERRITORIES CHILDREN THEY CUDDA MOVE YOU TO TIMBUKTOO. NO TEACHER OR PRINCIPAL SHOULD STAY AT ANY ONE GIVEN SCHOOL FOR ANY LONG PERIOD OF TIME THAT WAY THEY WOULD NOT FEEL AS IF THEY OWN THAT PARTICULAR SCHOOL. MYRON YOU ARE A GOOD MAN SCHUFFLE THEM UP AS YOU SEE FIT SO THAT THE TERRITORIES SCHOOLS ARE KEPT IN ORDER. YOU ALWAYS HAVE MY VOTE IT DOESNT MATTTER IF YOU HAVE ANTIGUAN ROOTS. THE POINT IS YOU ARE THE MINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND IT IS YOUR DUTY TO PERFORM YOUR JOB AS THE MINISTER. SO BACK OFF OF MYRON AND KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE WORK OF THE TEACHERS WHO ARE SET FORTH TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN THROUGHOUT THE TERRITORY MAKING SURE THAT ALL OF THEM GET AN EQUAL CHANCE AT GETTING THE BEST EDUCATION. NO BODY IS PERFECT SO REMEMBER THAT WHILE YOU ARE THERE POINTING AT MYRON WITH ONE FINGER THE OTHER FOUR POINTING BACK AT YOU.
