Mapp-Potter team thankful to BVI friends
The reception which went on from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM saw quite a few persons coming to celebrate with the Independent Governor elect and his Lieutenant Governor elect for their recent victory at the polls and subsequent runoff elections.
They are to be sworn in on Monday January 5, 2015. Mapp will become the American Territory’s 8th elected governor.
On hand for the victory celebration was Third District Representative and Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party Honourable Julian Fraser RA.
Speaking briefly at the ceremony, Potter, born in Tortola, was thankful to the Virgin Islands for the support. He said that the word was getting around as the phones were working between the two Territories. “A lot of phone calls went back and forth, a lot of influence was shared from here to St Thomas and the [rest of the] US Virgin Islands…so we got a feeling of whom the people of Tortola and the BVI were supporting,” he said.
“I know that once I indicated that I was born in Tortola that this might have had a little thing to do with it. I am happy to say that I was proud to indicate that I was born in Tortola…I actually left Tortola when I was ten and ever since then I have always had that strong feeling to come back here and do something but you know nothing before its time is what I always say,” he said.
“It was a pleasure working with Kenneth E. Mapp on the campaign trail. When I was asked to run with [Mapp] I accepted because I think the Territory was in dire need to have the best person at the helm and we could not take a chance to have anybody else running the US Virgin Islands at this time other than Kenneth E. Mapp,” he said.
Taking the microphone, Mapp thanked the team that organized the reception and those who supported the pair from the beginning.
“I want to thank the Friends of Mapp-Potter for sending those 40 boats down on November 4, 2014 and for sending them back on November 18, 2014. As the British would say we gave them on the other side a good thrashing on the 18th,” he said, referring to his defeat of Democratic Candidate Donna M. Christensen and her running mate Basil C. Ottley.
“Mr Potter and I have a pact that we will always going to communicate and that we are going to sit and always be honest with each other and say what we feel. Being open and honest with each other is going to help us to get our jobs done and we are going to get the opportunity to go forward,” he said.
