Many flood VIP for nomination! Some candidates revealed
Our news room’s sources close to the oldest political party in the territory have been tight-lipped about who were nominated at the close of the first round in the candidate selection process on March 31, 2015.
As per the VIP Constitution, the 9 district committees are the organs responsible for nominating candidates to run in a general election, whether in a district or At-Large.
However, at the meeting of the governing body which is the congress, other candidates can still be nominated from the floor.
According to our sources, the following candidates have been nominated via write in from the district committees to run both in the districts and At-Large.
Unlike the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), with one new face, the VIP is expected to have up to four new faces on the ballot, according to party insiders.
District 1- Hon Andrew A. Fahie-incumbent
District 2- two persons nominated
District 3- Hon Julian Fraser RA- incumbent
District 4- two persons nominated
District 5- Zoe J. Walcott -McMillan
District 6- Elvis J. Harrigan
District 7- Oleanvine Maynard
District 8- two persons nominated
District 9- four persons nominated
Thus far, some 8 persons have been nominated to run At-large with some others expected to be nominated from the floor on the Congress meeting night, according to our news room’s inside sources.
Step 1: Nomination, Step 2: Congress must vote
One senior party official confirmed the VIP was overwhelmed with people flocking to the party to be nominated; however, she wanted to advise that "the Governing body, the Congress, must still vote on the slate of 13 Persons."
The Party Leader and Chairman is Hon Julian Fraser (R3) who will be the next Premier, if the VIP is returned to power.
The NDP has also released their 13 candidates, according to a pro-government online news site with one out of 13 new faces running in the 2nd District in the person of Melvin 'Mitch' Turnbull.
VIP Legacy
Besides having the first and longest serving Chief Minister in H. Lavity Stoutt and the first Premier in Hon Ralph T. O'Neal OBE (R9), the VIP is best known for every single major development the Virgin Islands continues to enjoy today.
It was the VIP that cut and paved all major and secondary roads from Jost Van Dyke to Anegada, Virgin Gorda to Tortola. It was the VIP that built all schools in the Territory- on all islands- both primary and secondary, and also named them after our education stalwarts.
Many will recall, according to research, every single major development, from hotels to airports, bridges, seaports and the community college, both on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, have been a product of the Virgin Islands Party.
Some 80% of the educated class in the VI has been so educated under a VIP government through its scholarship programme. The Financial Services Sector, Tourism, Agriculture and local businesses have been a product of the VIP, according to the territory’s history.
Only VIP, no one else
It was under a VIP Government that we had our first mission to London, now the BVI House, which is considered a VI pride. It was the VIP Government that built all police and fire stations throughout the islands, and all community centres.
No other government while in office in the VI ever constructed a school, police or fire station, a court house or even achieved the prosperity for its residents like a VIP government, according to research by our news room and confirmed by party officials.
Different Philosophies
The upcoming elections, some political pundits say could happen in June or July of this year, is expected to be a dog fight between the ruling NDP and the main opposition VIP.
They already have two different economic philosophies with VIP boss Hon Fraser believing in Stimulus ie public and private sector investments to help create jobs, and keeping the economy afloat like what was done in the United States, which has led to the biggest recovery, while saving some money for a rainy day.
However, Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith believes in austerity- the European economic model of high taxes on the poor and middle class, no public sector spending, and saving all the money in the reserve.
