CHRISTIANSTED, St Croix, USVI — A man was shot in downtown Christiansted, St Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI) on Tuesday morning, November 29, 2016 by an unknown assailant, [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) Public Information Officer Glen Dratte has made known.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of the Buy Smart Mini Mart (Bienvenidos) on Company Street, resulting in the wounding of the victim, who was rushed to the hospital by private vehicle.

According to Mr Dratte, at about at 9:16 A.M., police officers were dispatched by the 911 emergency call centre to an incident that included the discharging of shots at the mini mart.

Upon arrival to the scene, officers encountered a green Chevy sedan leaving the area at a high rate of speed. However, it was not the suspect trying to escape; the vehicle was traveling to the Juan F. Luis Hospital with the gunshot victim. The vehicle was then escorted to the medical facility by the Special Operations Bureau and Bike Patrol units, according to Mr Dratte.

Patrol officers on the scene secured the area and the forensic unit gathered evidence. Mr Dratte said police could not speak to the victim because he was undergoing treatment for his wounds and was unable to give a statement.

Approximately 12 hours following the incident, police arrested 32-year-old Omari Kalem Gordon and charged him with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, according to Mr Dratte. The shooting was not Mr Gordon’s first run-in with the law; he was arrested on July 13, 2015 at 8:40 P.M. and charged with unauthorised possession of a firearm in the vicinity of Harbor View.

Unable to make bail of $500,000, Mr Gordon was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advise-of-rights hearing.

Police are asking anyone with knowledge that may lead to the arrest of individuals suspected of perpetrating criminal acts to contact 911, or Crime Stoppers USVI, where your tip may net you a payday.
