ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - This morning Monday, January 21, 2019, at about 8:15 AM, Mr David Callender, the brother of former Althea Scatliffe Primary School Principal, staged a one-man protest.

The protest is ongoing in front of the Tortola MASA office in Road Town in the area of the Market Square.

The man claimed that his brother, Gordon Callender—who was born in Trinidad—is being refused services by MASA to transport him back to his homeland.

Patient registered in Tortola - MASA

His brother—a retired teacher—is a patient at Peebles Hospital, and has diabetes in addition to being an amputee.

The brother claimed that he has been lobbying for MASA to airlift his bother to Trinidad where he will receive better services and be close to family.

However, according to the bother David, MASA is saying that the patient is registered in Tortola, hence, they cannot transport him back to Trinidad.

However, MASA is offering to take the brother out the territory out of courtesy, on a commercial flight if he can find the strength to travel that way.

Our newsroom paid a visit to the office of MASA this morning to inquire about the protestor’s claims over his brother, however, they had no comment.

      Masa should Pay!!

If all else fails, set up a Go-Fund-Me account and tell us how to find it. Mr Callender has countless past students.

As a past student I am more than willing to help but I would love to know what the Governmen is doing with these insurance companies that commit these crimes.

He paying into a system for years and now he needs help and cant get it? This is wrong! What does his address have to do with this? He is being airlifted for treatment overseas. I thought that was the purpose of Masa!

I live overseas, let’s say that I am in the hospital in Miami and I live in Miami, And I am well enough to go home I wow be discharged to go home to my Miami address. My relatives can’t come and say my family is in the Bvi and I need and Air ambulance back there because I have no place to stay or no one to look after me. Is that a medical emergency? It is my understanding that Mr. Callender is only at peebles because he has no place to stay.

So, tell us MASA, where would you transport him to? What was he paying for? Was this a part of the fine print that so many of us DO NOT take time to read or can't even see it?

In a case like this, all MASA clients should call for their monies back! This is darn rediculous to treat any client like this. Why hold the man hostage at Peebles(death trap) when he could receive better care and be surrounded by his love ones. Once these businesses hound and get your money, they could care less about your wellbeign...

MASA is a total waste of time. I believe it’s a system designed to extort money out of the poor. Not another dime MASA will get from me.

Glad to see he is taking a stand. This is a man who has been in the education system for 40 years here in the BVI. Made great contribution to this country. MASA and these insurances always have some clause. People need to join that movement with his brother. so sad!

He registered in Tortola? What utter nonsense. So when he registered, wasn’t he register with the understanding that when the needs arises and he needs to be medically airlifted, that MASA will provide such service. The government needs to intervene and investigate this MASA group

When you try everything, you gotta do what you gotta do to get justice in this place. I applaud you sir for your boldness. I am 50 years and Mr. Calli has taught my siblings older than me. I've known him since I've known myself. he has been a stalwart in this community and probably taught the same people in MASA who now trying to pull rank on him (hey he probably taught their parents and grandparents too). As with all the insurance companies in this place, they milk you for years without a problem and now its time for them to come thru for you, they find all kinda loop hole. Keep on them and VINO, I commend you for publishing this article. Wrong is WRONG.

Yes that’s what MASA does. They don’t explain the services that is in the “Fine Print. Just so they get your money and refuse you the service when it’s needed. I was in the same predicament where I wanted a family member to go to the US and was told I would have pay a very high difference in cost that was not affordable. They would only transport to PR or USVI. Had no choice but to decide on PR, where my family member received horrible care, hense his demise. MASA also refused to pay for repatriation of the remains to another country. Stating they would lonly pay to the place of origin which was BVI. Thankfully the repatriation facility was able to get a very good affordable cost.”
There were other problems with MASA too. They didn’t even want to pay for the accompanying family member cost for return trip to country of origin. Eventually they did.
I must state that the health insurance had agreed to cover the US care. They would have covered transport, but because we had MASA they would not cover the transport.
Another thing to note. MASA does not return you on their plane. They wil pay for commercial return flight.
Read your contracts, ask questions and upgrade if possible. But then there is still another hurdle. Most insurers in the BVI, including NHI will only approve for care outside of the BVI at the nearest facilities in their network which are PR, USVI or some other Caribbean island if it’s available there. You don’t seem to have a choice. Problem all around. We just have pray that all goes well.
Mr Calendar, my prayers and heart goes out to you. After all your hard work and dedication to this territory, government can at least step in and assist.

NHI is not a bad things, it just was implemented poorly. You can not provide health insurance to everyone who come into your country. There should be different plans. The cost of NHI is too high for some persons given the level of care they can access. NHI is not about access to good healthcare, it about access to sort of care. Just about all the statutory agencies offer their employee Supplementary group health insurance only Government has not done so.

I believe that NHI provide the same ambulance service? If this is the case I do not need to use the services of MASA. Can someone confirm, thank you.

How much does it cost to fly him back home? All schools need to come up with some kind of fundraiser to help with the cost.

The gentleman has been a resident for many decades and paying MASA for many years.
However, his home or domicile has been Tortola and that is the point.
