ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A man who is before the Magistrate's Court for allegedly breaching the territory's immigration laws pleaded with Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards today, September 12, 2013 to have his case expedited since he was allegedly in a precarious position in relation to his living arrangements.

Kenny Jackson of St Vincent was charged with landing in the territory without being granted leave from an immigration officer and told the Magistrate that he would maintain his previous not guilty plea.

When the matter was called before the court today, Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe said the defendant did not previously receive all the documents necessary to defend his case.

The Court heard that Jackson, who opted to act in his own defence, was only in possession of a caution interview he had conducted with police officers following his arrest earlier this year.

Scatliffe later handed over other documents to the defendant before Magistrate Richards expressed that an adjournment would now be required in order for Jackson to properly acquaint himself with the material.

An emotional Jackson told the court that he really had nowhere to stay and the persons that he was currently staying with wanted him out of the house, “It’s like, really hard for me,” Jackson told the Court.

Magistrate Richards indicated that she understood his position but related that the court could not deal with the case today in light of the circumstances.

Jackson, who is currently on bail, was asked to return to court on October 10, 2013 for the start of his trial.
