GREENLAND, Tortola, VI - A man was said to have narrowly escaped being hit by a door as it was blown open during an explosion in an apartment at Greenland, East End sometime this morning, March 17, 2015.

Virgin Islands News Online was told that the incident was brought to the attention of the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services and firefighters rushed to the scene.

According to Fire Chief Mr Zebalon A. McLean, it was discovered that the explosion was caused by leaking aerosol containers. "All the aerosol containers were intact, however, there was evidence of leaking from several of them so what we surmised that it was a combination of different chemicals.

"Added to that fact is that you had a lot of heat that could have done two things; it could not have only changed the chemical composition of some of the contents but it could have also acted as something that gave the 'boom' sound," said Mr McLean.

According to the Fire Chief, the incident occurred at the home of a Mr Alex 'Taxo' Potter and apparently when the explosion occurred the concussion slammed the door open but one of the residents escaped injury by jumping to safety.

"You should not store chemicals in places where they are exposed to heat nor should you store a wide variety of chemicals together. That is never a good idea," urged Mr McLean.
