Man allegedly shipped drugs to VI in ‘dummy’ Stereo set
Smith's family and others concerning the case had to endure standing in the heat of the sun from 2:00pm till into the evening around 7:00pm for the case to be called before Senior Magistrate Ms Tamia Richards yesterday March, 27, 2015.
Smith was not pleaded as his attorney Mrs Valarie Stephens-Gordon was not present but her colleague at the bar, attorney Leroy Jones stood in for her.
Bail was not granted.
Crown’s case
Crown Counsel Leslie-Ann Faulkner alleged that the accused shipped some 1.4kg of cannabis into the Virgin Islands (VI) sometime between February 22 and 25, 2015. The court heard that the man had travelled to the USA during the mentioned period when he allegedly shipped, via E-Zone, a fake/dummy stereo set into the VI.
The package was allegedly sent to Smith’s girlfriend.
On February 24, 2015 the package was received by E-Zone who reportedly realised that something was suspicious about the package sent by Mr Smith and immediately summoned the police.
Police reportedly inspected the package and discovered it was a dummy, had no working knobs and the inside was hallow.
Further investigations allegedly revealed six (6) packages on the inside. They were all wrapped in carbon paper and tape and allegedly had the strong scent of cannabis.
The police officers allegedly reassembled the dummy stereo set, repackaged it and left with the company to allow for it to be collected by the intended recipient.
Search conducted
On his return to the VI, Smith allegedly went with his girlfriend’s sister to uplift the package.
A warrant was secured by the police who then went to the home of Smith, who allegedly told police, "I have nothing to tell you all."
A search was reportedly conducted during which empty dime bags, a quantity of bamboo cigarette paper and a scale which allegedly had residue of suspected cannabis. The same residue was allegedly found on the toilet seat and in the toilet bowl.
Smith was taken into custody and under cautioned interview he admitted to having travelled to Florida, USA where he purchased and shipped to the VI a stereo set which when collected he observed was tampered with. The defendant was then formally charged and placed before the court yesterday.
Two babies on the way
During bail application, the court heard from attorney Jones that Smith is employed as a full time security guard at Peebles Hospital and spends hours during the night cleaning the streets of the VI as a garbage truck driver.
Jones also informed the court Smith needed to be placed on bail as he could not afford not to be working as he is expecting two babies, one each by different women.
The defendant was granted his liberty but not after his $80, 000 bail was signed and $10, 000 of it paid in cash. He is also to report to the East End Police Station on specified days and time. He was also required to surrender his travel documents.
Smith is to return to court on May 15, 2015.
Two others were also charged in relation to the matter but were not present in court and there was no mention of their identities or the reason for their absence.
