ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Leader of the Splash Band, Antoni ‘Daddy Pitt’ Tuckett, recently said it is time the brass skills of students leaving The Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) be utilized to keep the culture of music alive in the Virgin Islands (VI), a leading role that he and his members of the Splash Band are intending to take.

Describing the VI as a home of rhythm because it is dominated by the rhythm box, Mr Tuckett said that annually the ESHS produces a significant amount of students with brass skills but the skills are left lying idle.

“We also know that the high school produces thirty brass sections a year, what do those kids do with it after? They don’t have anything to do with the brass after. So we want to be a part of that element that is missing within the BVI,” said Mr Tuckett in an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online.

He said that in years gone by the VI was known for producing a lot of brass bands, “and within the brass band you have to play music because you cannot have horns men sitting down there not blowing so you have to play music. So we just want to leave a legacy for whoever comes after us.”

According to the musician and disc jockey, it is somewhat disappointing how music in the VI has evolved over the years since most persons are doing sequences and loops as opposed to the traditional way.

“Most people just do sequences and loops and they just ride on that and they get a good drive and a solid rhythm. For a brass band, if you doing brass and stuff it gets kind of boring so you have to adopt to that and get the use to technology and then find yourself on common ground.”

I am hoping someone is making notes with this story.....Much more needs to be done to keep these kids off of the street and music is one of the best tools to keep them motivated. Look at JDPP Band.

Great ideas, now we all have to work at implementing them. Also, what might be nice is to see the brass band participating in the festival. That will be a welcoming sight.

That would be a very good night in the village starting from 5pm with the steel band and ending at 1am with the brass band, brassorama and panorama on the same night. Look at ideas for the big 60
