Make Anegada a district by itself – Mr Liston Potter

- Anegada getting kicking about by both NDP & VIP – Businessman
In an open and candid discourse with this news site during a recent visit to the island, Mr Potter addressed the issue, one which reflected the sentiments expressed by several others. “We have seen tremendous growth up here especially in the tourism industry and that this place is progressing, not because of government necessarily but because we the people of Anegada putting our heels to the task and doing what we have to do.” Photo: VINO/File
“This what’s going on in Anegada is to be put on both governments, VIP and NDP because both of them have been in and the situation has never changed. Both government aint do nothing, all these is to blame on both government,” said a resident. Photo: VINO/File

SETTING POINT, Anegada, VI – “The interest and development of this island can only be properly addressed if we have a District Representative only for Anegada. It’s time to make Anegada a district by itself,” said Mr Liston Potter of Potter by the Sea.

In an open and candid discourse with this news site during a recent visit to the island, Mr Potter addressed the issue, one which reflected the sentiments expressed by several others. “We have seen tremendous growth up here especially in the tourism industry and that this place is progressing, not because of government necessarily but because we the people of Anegada putting our heels to the task and doing what we have to do.”

According to Mr Potter, with the islands having its own District Representative in isolation from Virgin Gorda their issues will stand out in the House of Assembly. “In that way we’ll be able to do a lot more for the island by itself and there’ll be no confusion as far as like with Anegada and Virgin Gorda, we doing this and that. It’s much harder to get things done for Anegada when you competing with the other islands,” said Mr Potter.

Both NDP & VIP to be blamed for Anegada

“This what’s going on in Anegada is to be put on both governments, VIP and NDP because both of them have been in and the situation has never changed. Both government aint do nothing, all these is to blame on both government,” said a resident.

According to the man, who said he feels passionately about the islands as its home to him and sees and knows what it contributes to the territory’s economic development especially in the fishing and tourism industry, the island is not getting back its fair share in subsidy. “So I would wholeheartedly support the call to have Anegada being a district by itself.”

Land issues

On the issue of lands at Anegada, the resident said the situation is different from that of any other in the territory. “Our land was given to us by Queen Victoria and we only getting deeds when elections time coming around,” he said adding, “they need to finish dealing with the people with the airport wall, give them the money for the airport land and continue to give out deeds to the people so they can build their houses and do further development.”

“They keeping back Anegada, that’s what they are doing,” he said. The resident blasted the NDP government for coming just before elections to tar a few road and he said, “Even with that Anegada got some pot holes you can bury people in them.”

Another resident said the issue of transportation in and out of the islands is a sore point that needs to be addressed. “We need transportation in and out of Anegada because we have to go Tortola for everything, this government only paying attention to the main land.”

“They doing a set of foolishness subsising these big airlines, subsise the local carriers, VI Airlink to do a regular schedule every day, we need frequent transportation by air and sea every day.”

Bring back our ambulance

“We had an ambulance over here, brand new, they took it from here carry it Anegada, they ain’t bring it back and that was sent to Anegada for emergency purposes,” said one resident who chose not to be named at this time.

According to the resident, with the population on the islands having grown, emergency response considerations must be in place and currently there is only a limited clinic on the island. He explained that should the need arise to get someone airlifted out there would be many challenges, including the fact that the medical personnel lives some distance away from the health care facility.

“No ambulance, this heartless government wants the man to pay an outrageous rent to live upstairs at the clinic, we are not taken seriously here, we are always like step children,” said the resident.

    I agree it stinks.
You can only access the island three times a week, as if its a foreign country.
There's no regard for Anegada at all. This has been true with both governments.

A Representative for 200 people. Can't be serious. We already have too much for the 25,000.

Clearly, this demonstrates that we cannot get along. Now, we want to add more confusion, who do you think will pay this bill?

Anegada provides all the Lobster sold in the BVI restaurants it also is a mecca for the sailing community, so subtract Anegada from the equation and the BVI is left in a very poor state for the tourist product, yet has no voice.....

to my Brothers and Sisters in Anegada. We feeling the same way on VG too. We have it just a little better than you guys. We know what it is like not having properly staffed and equipped ambulance and clinic, school falling apart, no proper way to get our sick and injured to proper medical care when necessary. we are treated far worse than step-children...I have seen step-children treated as equally children. Anegada should indeed have representation of their own if that is the will of the people BUT for the time being we orphans have to stick together and look out for each other. Hannibal has a plan, listen to what he has to say...he will surely listen to you. We don't want any PARTY...whenever there is a party, people enjoy themselves and after they leave you to clean up the mess and you have to go back to reality and on with your life, right? Let's work together Anegada and VG... Let's put Hannibal to work for us

You have a right to your opinion but if you were truly wise you would at least contribute something more substantial than name calling and meaningless words... because in reality YOU haven't said much. Anyone in their right minds would agree how FOOLISH you are.

The purpose of government is presumably to serve the needs of the people. Anegada and VG are very different places and each should have its own representation. Moreover, I believe each island should have its own leadership (i.e. chief, or mayor just like many towns in the rest of the world) to oversee its growth and development and to take a lead in implementation of policies and regulations at the local level. The present system of leaving this to Tortola does not really work.

Are you willing to pay more taxes for that? Where the resources will come from to pay those new posts and allow a mayor (and staff cause he or she must have staff) to carry out the work required?

What stupid statement is that about getting land only when election conning around. Is this the first election I've the BVI. People need to think before talking nonsense. Anegada Pham a leader for 40 years which to me indicates that there were quite a large number if elections. Now they are getting the land issues sorted and they are still making negative comments on the issue - wow

Neither VIP nor NDP will fix Anegada problems. Anegardans will have to help themselves they need more autonomy to do the things that needs to be done. The number of people on the Islands is not that important, what is important is whether they have the resources, revenue generating capabilities and proper community leadership to manage themselves. If they believe that they have it, they need to press forward. (If transportation is that important find a way to subsidize it yourself.)

Just my thought, Long ago the folks used to help themselves, now we waiting on someone else to do minor things we can help with. Just my thought. If you have ever been to Anegada you would have seen the road leading to the settlement the broken concrete, how differcult for Anegadians to throw some stone and sand to help with the swerving and damaging of vehicles, no we just want to pull down each other so who you think can make a good Rep. for Anegada, Tell me. I say send Myron to help them. HAHA. Hats of to you Mr. Minister BVI need more like you.

What we really deserve in the outer islands is first class treatment, not "Oh, I only just remember you" treatment. The total money spent on consultancies could have been shared between the three outer islands to address dire needs for each one. the residents should aim for luxury hospitality and make it the next Virgin Gorda and be the new crown jewel in the BVI. It isnt easy but you have the skills and should at least try. I'm an american that chooses to visit the BVI 2 or 3 times a year. I love all of your islands. What you have is special, and anegada is just waiting to be discovered and turned into a luxury paradise. Whomever is there first will be rich. It should be the locals that do it for themselves. Why wait for somebody to tell you that you can? If you do then it will be too late and outsiders will make the money. I wish I was from there so I could run for office and help you make the changes you want.
