ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Elmore Stoutt High School Makayla Maduro and Divannia Hill challenged the status quo of male dominated industries in their graduation speech which they gave jointly at the Elmore Stoutt High School graduation held on Thursday June 26, 2014.

“Young women of today are different, breaking out of stereotypes. No longer confined to the box in which society has placed us. Young women, like Makayla and I, are pursuing careers in the technical field and are exploring all types of other options, said Divannia Hill.

Makayla Maduro called on her female colleagues to be recognised for daring to step out from society’s confines.

“Can all the females of Industrial Technology 2014 stand? Our homeroom consists of seven young women. We are future architects, construction, civil and structural engineers and auto technicians,” said Maduro.

Hill said: “We are young women taking over a man’s world.”

“And in my close circle of friends, there are future forensic pathologists, criminal justice lawyers and so much more,” said Maduro. “We’ve learned to not settle,” Hill said.

“We’ve learned to embrace the fact that we can achieve more than ever thought possible,” said Maduro.

“Still not convinced that we’re different? Just take a look at Divannia and I. Once you would expect members of 5 Science, 5 Accounts or 5 Arts to hold the top positions in scholastic achievements,” she stated.

Maduro added that as members of Industrial Technology, “Divannia and I have learned so much more than just how to rewire circuits or how to use a tee-square. Our varied classes and teachers have taught us the vital lessons that we will take with us into our unknown but bright future.”
