ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - With some 38 active COVID-19 cases out of 47 total cases, Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has announced that the majority of legislators in the House of Assembly (HoA) now support a total 14-day lockdown of the Territory.

In statements released via social media late Sunday night, August 30, 2020, Premier Fahie said that during an informal emergency meeting of the House to discuss matters related to COVID-19, recommendations were made for an emergency meeting of Cabinet to look into a more stringent Curfew Order to assist in the containment of the virus.

14-day lockdown endorsed by most in HoA - Premier

"Other recommendations from the majority of Members included, but were not limited to, the immediate implementation of a new 24-hour Curfew of the Territory for a minimum of 14 consecutive days," Premier Fahie revealed.

In a joint statement by Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert and Health Minister, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) on Sunday, it was revealed that between Friday, August 28, 2020, and Saturday, August 29, 2020, sixteen (16) persons tested positive for the virus, with a likelihood of further transmission of COVID-19 in the Territory.

The Premier tonight said, Members of the HoA also gravitated to assist the health team in their ongoing aggressive contact tracing efforts without having to be concerned about persons who may be suspected as positive being mobile through the Territory, thereby contributing to the spread of the virus.

"Members expressed their concerns for the RVIPF and provided possible recommendations on how to use local expertise to temporarily fill any gap while those officers affected are in quarantine or recuperating," he said regarding a small group of officers who also tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Be ready for a possible lockdown - Premier urges

As part of the update, Premier Fahie urged the public to be in a state of readiness should Cabinet endorse the recommendations coming out of the HoA Meeting, for the implementation of the full 14-day 24/7 lockdown.

"I can assure you that whatever decisions Cabinet makes will be in the best interest and safety of the people of the Virgin Islands," Hon Fahie noted.

Cabinet is scheduled to meet on Monday, August 31, 2020, at 4:00 pm to decide the way forward.

More details to come.

Here is why this is not a smart or a wise decosion.."of course, its the easy way out".. 1/ Shutting the country down is shutting the economy down, can we afford to do that.....2 / Is shutting the country down for 14 days will make the virus go away disappear, if the answer is no. .then why? ....3/ Can we afford to continue paying civil servants for been home, how sustainable is this, this neither wise or smart especially as our revenue is very limited?....4/...Whats the re-opening plan, to shut down again when we get more cases, this is like going through a revolving door....

This is where remote working will come in. The work of the civil service will continue and I am sure that the work of many other agencies will continue. The persons building homes perhaps they can be let out to continue - walk with your lunch because you’re moving from Home straight to work and back home.

You have to face this thing. Let the country operate but put measures in place to ensure that whatsoever issues are happening, do not continue to happen. The rest of the whole is not acting the way the BVI is. Do you what you must to boost your immune system. Follow the guidelines and you will be ok. This is someone who’s been in the worst of this pandemic. There are people In the USA who are protecting themselves. Stop living in fear

Easier said than done: if the @#$%s remained in isolation we have no issues: they not staying at home!!!!!!

The VI is small; all of us using the same banks; all of us going shopping in the same markets

Lockdown is a fix but will we lockdown forever because after any lockdown and no one make sure social distancing is enforcement(what)

When you drive through your community some of the bars/clubs have massive crowds(by our standards...little VI)

Our territory is small and some residing here have it to be joke and not complying with laws and sadly our own folks are deeply involved.....

I am against lockdowns but one is needed this time around. If 16 tested positive in the last 2 days there are many more. The only thing I would do differently is leave the grocery stores open for 3 hours per day so that there is not a mad rush again and so that we don’t have to feed the masses. Also, open one gas station for essential staff only. No pass, no gas. And cooking gas delivery only. Everything else, closed. No beach whatsoever. The 90% lockdown will give you time to reset and start again. Get spread under control, patrol the borders and enforce new measures. Stiff fines for violators, no bars for rest of the year.

I understand. If you must, then you must. It is very necessary at this point especially since the RVIPF staff has been crippled by the contagion. The strain on the working force and the likely possibility of spreading this virus, is too great.

We were doing so good B.V.I.; so good. I remember way back in March when the news was covering the virus spread in Italy, and other places of the world, this government went into combat and shut any possible threat down. For some it help and for some it didn't (money-wise), but for all us it kept us well and safe from impending harm. It's sad now today, because of reckless, selfish and asinine behavior that we are experiencing these ramifications.

I leave here again with these words of solidarity BVI, for whatever comes what may; we will persevere: "When everybody’s health is at stake, true freedom is to follow instructions."

The Government should have taken the help of the Uk. Government should have invested money in securing more test kits to test the entire population. A total lockdown is not really needed right now as the lockdown of March April proved to have killed more people than Covid 19 itself. An idea could be to do a community lock down for each district for 7 days where you make it mandatory to get tested. Maybe two districts at a time. You will be able to roam within your community/district for walks or visit local approved businesses within the community to get only essentials, adhering to proper protocols. Once testing is completed in the district anyone with the virus can be isolated and quarantined, then on to the next district/s. Restrict access in and out of the community/district by placing baracades and strict security. Those same UK officers would have done a wonderful job in making sure this would be adhered to because they are not affiliated with anyone here. This is just a thought but testing everyone will be the only solution to help combat this virus.

This is a clear lack of vision from our so-called leaders. Envy of the Caribbean he said. Now living our vomit. With no clear plan for the future. Reacting instead of leading. This is what happens when you surround yourself with "Yes men" and people who are out of touch wth the community and who themselves have no vision. The blind leading the blind.

Lockdown is like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound! Waste of time. As you come out of it, more cases in your azz. As soon as you open up the place, boom again. We must learn to coexist with this virus. Very sadly, we are not immune from nature or the rest of the world's problems. So some may die as a result. But that is nature and survival of the fittest to make a stronger community moving forward. This has been the law of nature since the beginning of time.

No I don't want my family or me to die. Not my friends. But lockdown is not the answer. Strict protocols, quarantined, connect tracing, no gatherings, hygiene protocols and everybody get tested.

A full 24 hours lock down will not solve the problem. Covid-19 will not be eradicated anytime soon. Government should continue contact tracing, testing, and continue urging persons who may have been exposed to get tested or isolate themselves if they have any symptoms. In the meantime, everyone should continue to follow the social distancing protocols, wash your hands regularly and wear your masks once you are around people not from your immediate household.

Too late for this now. The genie is out of the bottle and it wont be going back in. Better to maintain the situation as it is and allow limited movement for people to purchase essential supplies. Given the small population here and the relative lack of lethality that the virus has it may be an option to allow it to run through the population as we could generate herd immunity a lot quicker than other countries. This would have the added benefit of allowing us to open a lot quicker and start to revive the economy.

I would be intrigued to know how much of the cabinet's views are based on fear and how much is driven by science and statistics.

    • Local (31/08/2020, 10:02) Like (2) Dislike (2) Reply
@horse and stable door stop listening to foolishness there is no such thing as herd immunity what people need to get in their heads is that there is no cure for this virus at present once you get it you have it until a cure is found when they say person have recovered it's from their symptoms and the negative shows that the virus is non reactive. The truth is that it can be trigger something down the road again that's why the CDC are saying they think person have immunity up to 3 months with the antibodies in their system but beyond that there can't say that person can't become reinfected because little is known about this particular Corona virus. It would be the interest of person to protect themselves.
      • Correction (31/08/2020, 16:06) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Herd immunity is possible but it will just take time and its whether or not you are prepared to accept the risks of allowing it to spread against the risks of trashing the economy. Any reinfection would likely be the result of a mutation in the original virus and so it would not necessarily be the same strain second time around. Flu vaccines are issued on a best guess basis, the docs work out which strain is expected to be prevalent and that's the one you get the vaccine for.

At some point we have to accept that this is not going away and we will have to live with it. How long do you propose we stay cut off from the rest of the world and at what cost? The US is unlikely to get its infections down to a manageable number anytime soon so how long do keep the border closed?

Herd immunity, economic collapse, I can tell where some people get their information from. Every country that was being advised of the same herd imunity and open up to save the economy are now faced with 4 things. 1 their economy is still collapsing 2 but now they have the most covid cases and deaths 3 it is now much more difficult for them to revive and come out of the crisis because 4 they still have to shut down but now they have a worst off economy a failing health system and a high percentage of covid cases, who is more concerned about their health and immediate dying than the same economy the government exposed them to covid 19 in order to save. Do the research and stop getting your information from mainstream sources .

The first lockdown was premature and has put us in a vulnerable position. However, this time a lockdown with some adjustments is necessary because the virus is spreading like wildfire. More people have it than a lot of you all are realizing. Some of the banks and Police Officers are infected. We cannot allow our health care system to be overwhelmed. Sick and broke will be much worse than being broke. By the way, not all Civil Servants are being paid to do nothing. Some of us actually do work, even during the lockdowns.

Deeds petty tyrants use any excuse to improson us.

What’s the strategy? Elimination not possible unless controlled entry for next couple of years. Tourism will die.

Financial services will wither as professionals decide they cannot live in the BVI with no option of travel and discriminatory policies on return.

Ganga and casinos are not the answer.

    Need to live with this.

    United Virgin Islands the future?

Another lockdown will only make things worse...

Look at how supermarkets are today...

Close our borders. PROPERLY. At the moment it has too many holes...

Keep what we have now but be more strict on the rules...

People should be allowed to exercise and buy their groceries.

Construction (and hurricane prep) employs a lot of ppl so should continue.

Food takeaways should be allowed as will keep some restaurants going.

Bars must stay closed and beauty shops, garages and all other sort of business.

Don't hurt ppl and the economy even more...

This lockdown is going to breed crime . People hurting bad out here as it is , you all who in favor of a lockdown getting your Bill's pay and putting food on your table. There are a lot of us out here cant do that and people will have no choice but to turn to a life of crime to feed and support their families. 2. There are four storms out there in the Atlantic and people are here preparing with the little they have in case of a hurricane . The lock down will put a stop to that and if a hurricane do approaches the vi what will happen ?.when we we get time to prepare ?.

I hope the Government are prosecuting all those people who smuggled the illegal entrants. They should fine them as well to pay for all quarantine and covid 19 tests, the doctors and nurses time - as well pay for their own time in prison. If they get sick why should BVI taxpayers pay for them when they done illegal things and now caused the 24 lockdown. They should pay.

Why the Government not police the borders from the sea earlier? Its well known that people were going to Jost VD and partying with people from St. Thomas and no-one stopping the boats dropping off people from there. You only have to watch how many boats coming in. I was told also the boats allows drug trade to continue. If the BVI BVI loses the financial services industry and the expats then it will become just another drug riddled Caribbean country with crime out of control. Its time to let the UK Navy patrol the seas.
