DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - A major fire disaster was this afternoon November 29, 2015 averted after a car caught fire near to the VI Motors gas station in Duffs Bottom but was brought under control by a fast arriving Fire Service truck.

Speaking to this news site, Kishmet B. Daniels said that she was among the first persons to see the car smoking in an abnormal manner and she realised that it was on fire.

She said that she quickly shouted to the driver to exit the vehicle and as he attempted to slow down and stop he pulled up right next to a nearby gas station.

“A car started to spark…I saw it from [a little distance away]. So I was hollering to get him to get out the car. He pulled up to the gas station and the car went ‘boof’ and I saw a lot of fire come out of it. So I took out my phone and I called the fire station one time because anyhow that had catch a fire today I don’t think they would have had a Tortola,” said Daniels.

“The gas station would have been destroyed, the New Life Baptist Church would have been destroyed, people would have lost their homes because nobody knew what was going on until I started screaming,” she said.

According to Daniels, the car started to spark in the vicinity of a nightclub just before the gas station. “He tried to go on the side by the gas station to get out after the [explosion] went off. It just so happened that where the vehicle stopped is where the gas station is. He was very close to the gas station and very close to [a heavy duty vehicle loaded with fuels],” she said.

She thanked the Fire and Rescue Service for responding in the quick manner that they did, saying that they arrived within five minutes of being called.

According to the woman, the man whose car caught fire, a Jamaican national, thanked her for her quick action. She said that the man reminded her that he used to pick her children up while they waited for rides on the road to go to school and now the favour had been returned and for that he was grateful.

Daniels is upset that while the disaster was impending, people sought to pull out their phones and record it instead of trying to help the situation.

Chief Fire Officer Zebalon A. McLean told our newsroom that while he had no intricate details as yet, he can confirm that the fire was responded to by members of the Fire and Rescue Service. He said that the engine compartment of the vehicle was completely destroyed.

That is one of those old right hand drive cars that japan rejected and was brought in here to be sold cheap. Cars over 7 years old should not be allowed/imported in the country or should be taxed high.
