ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Today November 3, 2014 Luis Quiones Zaga was sent to Her Majesty’s Prison, Balsum Ghut on a twelve month sentence after he was placed before the Courts for overspending his time in the Virgin Islands (VI).

The man was said to have been illegal in the Territory for some twelve years. In addition to the twelve months sentence he was ordered to pay a fine of $1K failing which, he would have to spend an additional two months in prison.

The sentence was handed down by Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards.

The man was taken into police custody in August 2014 after police followed leads provided that pointed to him being illegal.

Records had shown that his time in the Territory ended on July 27, 2002.

The Court had heard that he was a baker and a cleaner with a named company but was not working with that company at the time of his arrest. He was at the time residing in Purcell Estate.

His passport has been expired for a number of years now.

I don't understand. Exactly what is the Immigration Dept doing in terms of keeping checks on persons entering & leaving the country....seriously. So I would imagine that within the system it records entries & the length of time stay, correct me if i'm wrong. If so then how does a person enter & remain for such a span of time....12yrs? Madness

The only place in the Caribbean where laws don't have no teeth because there are no systems in place. Deport him and fine the employer.

Why spending tax payers money on a person that they think doesn't belong here? Imagine the authorities don't want him here because he is illegal but put him in jail for 14 mor months,he's still illegal and now eating 3 meals a day without paying for them, taxpayers have the bill. After feeding him for fourteen months and still been illegal they will deport him, why not now?

Wouldn't it make more sense to give him a suspended sentence and deport him?
