‘Low value on Nottingham Estate land is racism!’ – Edmund G. Maduro

Radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro continues to call on the Government to put an end to racial discrimination in the Virgin Islands as he pointed to the low valuation placed on lands in the Nottingham Estate, East End, Tortola as yet another example. Photo: Internet source
“You have people here that when they value land, because of whom it belongs to they will value it for a million dollars an acre. I am saying to you, if you have land in the British Virgin Islands that is valued at a million dollars an acre then the Nottingham Estate land should be valued at three million dollars an acre,” Maduro said. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro continues to call on the Government to put an end to racial discrimination in the Virgin Islands as he pointed to the low valuation placed on lands in the Nottingham Estate, East End, Tortola as yet another example.

Speaking last night December 4, 2014 on his EGM Show heard on ZROD 103.7 FM Mr Maduro said that because of the value in terms of integrity that the lands on Nottingham Estate hold, their dollar value should be higher than what is given by the valuators.

He is of the view that this is the case because of the fact that the land is owned by black Virgin Islanders.

“You have people here that when they value land, because of whom it belongs to they will value it for a million dollars an acre. I am saying to you, if you have land in the British Virgin Islands that is valued at a million dollars an acre then the Nottingham Estate land should be valued at three million dollars an acre,” he said.

“We are being discriminated against as they continue to tell you that the black man’s land is worth less than the white man’s land. I will tell you this, if that Quaker estate was owned by white people it would be more valuable than Oil Nut Bay in terms of acreage. But who is looking out for us? Where is the leadership? Where is the integrity?” he asked.

“The Nottingham Estate is the most valuable estate in the whole world based on human integrity. A gift of love to freed slaves…the only of its kind in the whole world. But its value is ignored, degraded and discriminated against because it is owned by black people,” he stressed.

“And who is doing it? It is the real estate people. When you go in there with your property they are going to do it for little and nothing because you’re black. I am telling you that this is happening here in the British Virgin Islands. I know it. I have been working at the bank for seven and a half years. I know it is still going on,” he said.

No, it's not racism. Blaming everything on race = Racism. Does this guy ever had a good day in his life?

Also, the irony is, that as he causes more divide and bitter feeling with his racist talk, he is contributing to the devaluation of the land. Who would want to buy land in an area where there is a potential racism/anti white issue? Certainly not anyone who would want to easily resell or anyone who isn't black.

I am all for people getting what is theirs but in this case people should be aware that how an area is kept will affect value! Clean Up the Damn Place!

Yes Yes so very true. Land adjacent to a caucasian "million dollar property", waterfront property with more acreage than that of the adjacent property , I know first hand he has evaluated at a pitiful fraction. Opened my eyes wide to reality in my BVI. Don't know his motive but I glad I know.

Racism is too strong to say but that's how it is. Nottingham Estate, Spring Ghut, Hope Hill, Greenland, Long Look are low value when you compare with other areas in the island. Quality of living not good and the criminal activities some them area attract but nothing to do with racist. Just a different breed of people and lifestyle make the place worth less than other areas.

Pleas note the land value in Spring Ghut, Nottingham Estate and Hope Estate are not low valued because of who owns it but because the land does not have any buildings to increase the value. Land any where with out any collaterol as in any type of strcuture will have a low value.

Please note if the land owners decide to develop these properties then the value will increase and also people needs to be of mind that building decent housing will keep the value of property however when others knock up a building around the area the value decreases. They also need to keep the area clean.

Yes!!!! Too much truth! Virgin Islands Born and Virgin Islands Bred, and when I die I will be Virgin Island dead.
I am a land owner in the BVI, Have my deeds under my bed in the United States and I know the value of what my Grand Mother left for me and not one rock-stone is for sale to any Blue-Eyed Devil. It is time for Tortolian to wake-up and see what is really going on with these stupid Tortolian whose business is fronting for the Blue-Eyed Devil for the look of a dollar bill.

People, land is only worth what someone will pay for it. Some areas are prime sites, investors will pay a premium.
The price of BVI land is being driven down as no investor wants to come here to live. Ask yourself why would you, water and electric not guaranteed, roads with pot holes and unfinished, no up to date medical facility, one good restaurant, food expensive, people rude and (see above) don't like whites, no respect for law and order. Comments on this and other news sites are actually an advert for the BVI and visitors/investors read these sites before they decide to come here. People of BVI are driving down the value of their assets, shooting mselves in foot. Some land worth nothin.

Couldn't have said it better myself except don't forget to add a lack of any decent air link to the reason nobody wants to come here and pay any money for land.

This is so disturbing. We the people are becoming increasingly irrelevant in this country.
