Look who we caught on camera! Can you pick the next Premier?

- Would the Virgin Islands get a Premier Fraser or another four years of Dr Smith?
As the 2015 general elections approaches, many have concluded that one of the two men photographed together yesterday, April 12, 2015 at the races, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) and current holder of the office Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith (left), will be the next Premier of the Virgin Islands. Photo: VINO

It is anyone's guess as to what the conversations could have been about between the two veteran politicians who often share differing views on the direction of the territory. Photo: VINO

SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- While the politicians were out in numbers at the post Easter races at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay yesterday April 12, 2015 look who Virgin Islands News Online caught on candid camera!

As the 2015/16 general elections approaches, many have concluded that one of the two men photographed together yesterday at the races, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) and current holder of the office Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith, will be the next Premier of the Virgin Islands.

While the two men have major political differences, economic philosophies, and often clash on policy directions, it seems like they had some moments to bond yesterday at the races as they were seen, more often than not, together whispering in each other’s ears.

However, we would not speculate too much on the conversations of the two party bosses but may leave that to the cartoonist’s creativity. Maybe, however, Premier Smith was doing an early handover or maybe he was telling Hon Fraser that he loves his office and he is not going anywhere!

The two were spotted at one of the many booths at the race track that is located in Hon Fraser’s Third District and it was unclear which one, if any, were ‘blowing the house’.

Then they were spotted again together in the middle of the concert section of the track platform, maybe asking each other to be nice in the upcoming elections or maybe Hon Fraser was begging for something to be done in his district.

It was good for many to see the two leaders being nice, civil and courteous to each other; as if you listen to the harsh rhetoric from some of their supporters and other elected members of the House of Assembly you would believe that both Hon Fraser and Smith are sworn enemies.

But one thing for sure, unless there is some freak act of nature that prevents the 2015/16 Virgin Islands elections, there will be either another four years of the National Democratic Party Administration under Premier Smith or for the first time in twenty years a new Premier that is not named O’Neal or Smith, but Fraser under a Virgin Islands Party Government.

However, once the music stops, the tempers cool, the spin and rhetoric pass, the headlines fade and are forgotten and the wagers end, only the people, that is the registered voters, will decide who will form the next government.

I was going to say the one in blue and blue, but I agree, the old Premier will be the new Premier.
This due to comparing the 2 terms of the VIP (1999-2003 and 2007-2011) and the NDP (2003-2007 and 2011-present). NDP wins plus their slate of candidates looks much stronger.

To me it is not just who will be the next Premier.it is a breathe of fresh air to see two bvi islanders putting their differences aside and being who we are.....one people. Let's leave the politics in the house sometimes and be family/friends. Lately we have adopted a kind of politics that was not like us. A good example for our young people. You could have different opinions without using violence or being verbally abusive

at the end of the day some of us are family or long-term family friends (no love gets lots)..sticks & stones brake bones but word do no harm....we must not let political matters(words) divide or separate us from our heritage......

A picture is worth a 1000 words. This picture should bring a smile on all Virgin Islanders face and a warmth within in their hearts. A positive and priceless image for external investors/ investment, the lifeblood of the local economy. It is picture of hope that Virgin Islands pols can disagree on political philosophy, policy, procedures…..etc without being disagreeable. It confirms what most people already knew that pols can be vociferous combatants in the HOA yet outside of those hallowed halls they can be civil. It is good pic, though some may say it is only a pic. But hopefully it is a more than a pic and gust of positive wind that will endure.
