Long Look residents want damaged road fixed urgently

- call on Government to be proactive
Residents and others who commute daily along a stretch of road just above Long Look are becoming concerned that before long a serious accident could result consequent of the road being eroded to a hazardous state following heavy rainfall over the past weekend. Photo: VINO
The stretch of road is one that is relatively narrow and prior to it becoming as bad as it is, two vehicles had challenges passing alongside each other and, now in its current state, it’s virtually impossible for two vehicles to pass without the risk of falling over the edge. Photo: VINO

The damaged area of the road is not one hard to locate as it sits in clear view of all who have to traverse the area that is a short distance from the old burial ground in Long Look. This road, which seems to have been extensively eroded during heavy rainfall over the past weekend, has worsened as it was already in a poor state for more than three years now. Photo: VINO

LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI – Residents and others who commute daily along a stretch of road just above Long Look are becoming concerned that before long a serious accident could result consequent of the road being eroded to a hazardous state following heavy rainfall over the past weekend.

This has caused persons to issue an urgent call to the relevant authorities to take a proactive move to correct the fault. “We like hot news on VINO but we don’t want news created, we prefer save life rather than reading hot news about a partner falling off the road in his truck because we government didn’t fix a road,” said a resident living in close proximity to the faulty road.

“They waiting for some body car fall over there before they come fix that, them is things you all need to be writing about every week till them man fix this, it’s crazy,” yelled a commuter to a reporter of this news site just last night August 17, 2015.

“It been bad long now and you know that miss and now everything going totally break away with that rain over the weekend. We boy live right round the corner (he was alluding to Seventh District Representative Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering who is also the Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and labour) and Marlon (Representative for the Eighth District Honourable Marlon A. Penn) right over on top. He pass here all the time [so he] can’t say he don’t see this,” continued the man.

The stretch of road is one that is relatively narrow and prior to it becoming as bad as it is, two vehicles had challenges passing alongside each other and, now in its current state, it’s virtually impossible for two vehicles to pass without the risk of falling over the edge.

People need to understand that Government can't fix everything they need help from the public as well, we have to do our part. In the first instance, the people are the cause of it, digging their foundations too close to the road and expect it not to cave in. Come on people, use a bit of common sense and protect your country, yourself, and your fellow men.

@Think about it, public roads construction, repair and maintenance in the VI are the responsibility of government. Public roads non-rival and non-excludable services, ie more than one person can use them at the same time and no one can be excluded from using them. Given the responsibility, government is responsible for operating the road network in a safe manner to protect property and life.

This road looks like it has in a poor and deteriorated condition for a long time and the victim of poor drainage. The road was neglected. Neglected roads fail prematurely and requires high maintenance cost well short of design life. Currently running in other publications there is a good article on road maintenance. In any event, this road poses a danger to the motoring public and needs to be fixed soonest. In reality, it should be closed. But there are few alternate routes. Fix the road now before heaven forbids and a fatality occurs. If a fatality occurs due to negligence, some will have guilt and should be held accountable. Let's prevent a tragedy.

Agree that construction by a property owner should not affect the structural stability of another property. Are not construction permits required? Does not Public Works or Town and Country Planning provide oversight of permits/construction? Private construction should not undermine public roads.

Every country have laws and rules, but here no one enforces them because everybody is somebody cousin and nobody wants to step on anybody foot. People need to be self sufficient and learn to think outside the norm. If those two home owners didnt cut their foundation so close to the road it would not have been like that.
Albeit, road maintenance is the government responsibility but the government is not responsible for every foolish thing the public does. Town and Planning too is to blame because they really does do a very poor job when it comes to how much distance from the road people are allowed to build. I guess building your houses on the road is a norm here anyway.

You all need to check the road in Hodges Creek by the New apartment building where thr own of that building mashup the road, where sewage is continually being pumped down the hill and when you see the water at the bottom it's not rain water people. It's just awful and the departments and government officials are not doing anything about it.
