SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – Horse owners have expressed excitement in anticipation of the upcoming races set for June 2, 2013 at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay.

Violet ‘Letty’ Hodge of L&B racing stables has described the upcoming event as a very good card and will be fielding two horses come race day.

More than 20 horses horses will be participating in the races.

Hodge said condition sheets are already in for the horses and there is significant participation from neighbouring St Thomas' horses for the card. She stated that she is expecting an excellent turnout for the races.

Champion horse, Really Uptown, is currently on a much deserved break and would not be participating in the event.

Meanwhile, Lesmore Smith of Top Priority Stables, who has four entries in the races, stated that he is also expecting a good turnout after the races were pushed down one week away from the weekend that they are normally held each year.

The horse owner said this was in order to accommodate a bigger crowd and also to avoid competing events to be held on the island for the previous weekend.

Bambi Bound (St Croix) has also just been added to the card for the 6 ½ furlong feature race of the day, and is expected to compete against Broken Home, Bud White and Winaholic.

Scores are expected to be settled, as the race is pitted as somewhat of a rematch between Broken Home and Bambi Bound who have shared a rivalry of late. The two horses have never competed against each other in Tortola before.

Smith said he has already had his horses running through their paces and has seen excellent results thus far. “I’m looking forward to some sort of showing,” he said.

Winaholic is set to make his debut at Ellis Thomas Downs after competing recently in the Carnival races at the Clinton E. Phipps racetrack in St Thomas, USVI in April.

Square One is also scheduled to make a return after a year-long layoff and The Ghost will make its debut appearance in the first race of the day.

President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Karen Smith-Aaron, said she was also hopeful for a great turnout, especially since the last races held at Ellis Thomas Downs was 5 months ago.

Cricket. Lovely cricket will soon be replacing this nonsense. All we need is to send the bulldozers in, knock down the silly little stadium that is there and build a big one for the great sport of cricket.

In the meantime I think a bulldozer race will be far more exciting than watching those 3-legged, flea infested horses limp around the track.
