Local fashion designer Kristin C. Frazer goes to White House
This is according to a press release from Tréfle Designs dated June 17, 2014. It said that the Virgin Islands will be recognized through designer, Kristin C. Frazer who is the first recipient of this award from the Virgin Islands.
“Tréfle’s collections have been featured on local, regional and international runways and have been credited as “the company to watch” by many fashion elites in the business,” said the release.
Kristin C. Frazer spoke exclusively with Virgin Islands News Online today June 18, 2014.
“Karib Nation Inc. contacted me for the first time back in late February [of 2014]. I got an email stating that I would be receiving such an award. At the time I read it and then I kept on doing what I was doing and then I said this is actually pretty big,” she said.
“It piqued my interest to go to Washington to get such an award because I know that they recognize designers within the Caribbean every year and that they award designers for doing wonderful things,” she said.
“So for me, having a company only for about five years to be receiving an award such as that is very commendable and I felt it was fantastic. I was [overwhelmed] so much that I asked them what I did to receive such an award because I am not really anywhere yet. I still have a long way to go,” she told this news site.
“They explained it in detail that they talked to bloggers, fashion critics, others in the fashion industry, local media and international magazine publications,” she said.
Asked how she felt winning the award, she said, it made me feel really good. It means I could keep going and keep pushing because living in the BVI and doing what I do is very very hard and on top of that I have two other jobs so I try my best to design and keep my company going and push myself and push my company to its limit as an international brand and of course I love to carry the BVI long with me,” Frazer said.
Frazer, born on the island of Tortola, interned for Carolina Herrera and BCBG Max Azria, and received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Fashion Design and Marketing from the International Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa, Fl. USA.
According to the release, Trèfle is now being sold in several boutiques within the VI and Florida. “With the success of her new line of resort-wear for women, a kids swimwear line called Trefle284 under the Trefle label and the launch of her new online boutique(www.trefledesigns.com), Kristin is surely on her way to becoming a household brand for her company and her country alike,” the release said.
According to the release, Karib Nation Inc. will be hosting the annual CARIBBEAN STYLE & CULTURE Fashion showcase. This is an event that highlights excellence and remarkable contributions to those who have significantly impacted the Caribbean Region's rich Culture and the burgeoning Fashion Industry through unique and compelling designs, production and presentation, the release said.
“Caribbean designers will also be taking part in a week of activities that will provide networking and a wider platform for the promotion of each designer’s brand. The week of events will host the Bahamas Consulate General Reception on Wednesday June 25th, the Congressional Black Caucus on Capitol Hill & White House visit on Thursday June 26th, a Fashion Show and the Karib Nation Inc. Awards Presentation on Friday June 27th ending with Couture in the Park on Sunday June 29th. Part of the proceeds of the Fashion Showcase and awards presentation also benefit the Caribbean’s Children’s Foundation.
United States President Barack H. Obama has declared June as Caribbean American Heritage Month in the United States. Karib Nation, Inc. was founded in 1992 in Baltimore, and as a non-profit organization, it promotes Caribbean-owned businesses in the United States.
