ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Since the 2011 general elections, many Virgin Islanders have faced systematic victimisation, loss of jobs and have had to deal with financial hardship directly due to the ruling National Democratic Party government. Now comes word of another Virgin Islander who has the courage to go public about his experience.

The former Government Press Secretary and independent candidate for the 9th electoral District in two elections (2007 and 2011) Devon U. Osborne told the public in a New Year’s message that “In 2014, windows of opportunities were open to me but the doors to get in were closed in my beautiful homeland. Because of that, I was forced to take up temporary employment in a foreign land.”

Had to run for his economic life under NDP

Mr Osborne told the world via a facebook address that; “I say to you the people of these Virgin Islands that within the past three years, I made the attempt to invest as an entrepreneur on the call of our Premier Dr. The Hon. Orlando Smith, to come forward with business ventures that would help to enhance our tourism product.

I also sought to acquire work under his National Democratic Party Government Administration as a Sports Director at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. I submitted a proposal request to implement a Physical Education Sports and Recreation programme to the president of the college. I also applied for the post of Executive Director of the Recreation Trust. Additionally, I also applied for the post of Director of Youth Affairs and Sports, all under the Ministry of Education and Culture responsible for sports.”

The Virgin Gorda resident pointed a finger at the controversial Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn and Premier Dr. The Honourable D. Orlando Smith and warned the territory, “to beware of those that would drive your wellbeing or businesses into the ground so that you would have to beg them for bread, scholarships, jobs, and handouts.”

Can’t even get land he paid for!

Mr Osborne told the public that “I was awarded crown land, along with many other citizens and residents of the 9th District, since December of 2010. I paid the required purchase and survey fees for ownership in full”.

According to the former 9th district candidate, to this date, the Deputy Premier, Hon. Dr. Kedrick D. Pickering, the Minister responsible for Natural Resources and Labour, has not responded to his call for his Ministry to execute the survey on the identified land space so that “our land titles can be handed over to us citizens and residents for further development.”

“Is this what we call empowering our people?” He asked in his address. Mr Osborne called on the people of the Virgin Islands to “open your eyes to the truth that is surrounding us as a people in being treated with fairness and equality and not injustice of becoming a victim of this NDP system”.

I want to run with VIP-Devon U. Osborne

Mr Osborne, who ran a successful radio show on ZROD 103.7 FM and is well known for the character Willie Pelly, said he wants to run with the main Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) of Chairman Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3).

While VIP officials have not selected their slate of candidates as yet, Mr Osborne took to social networks and said; “Today as a member of the Virgin Islands Party seeking nomination, I am calling on all members and delegates of the 9th District Committee and Virgin Islands Party, to consider my public request as a candidate whether District or At-Large in the upcoming General Elections.”

NDP record

The last three years of the NDP has resulted in many locals and residents being faced with political firing from the public sector, transfers, lack of promotions, denial of contract renewal and others forced to retire. In the meantime, the economy is in the tank and crime has skyrocketed, however the NDP continues to say the economy is robust, crime is down and things are booming.

"Beware of those that would drive your well being or businesses into the ground so that you would have to beg them for bread, scholarships, jobs, and handouts.” Thats their modus operandi but we will see who is foolish enough to go do that thing again.

Firstly, please do not confuse me for the Myron who is in office. I chose to use my name because many will hide behind the blogs to make comments but I just saw Mr. Osborne's message and it really touched a nerve to bring a tear out of my eye.

Mr. Osborne I know your mother is looking down on your with a bright smile and I want to tell you that where ever you are, your country needs you so please come back home to fulfill your dream of representing the people. I am one of those that came to this country and made it my home and the BVI has been good to me. I believe your message is sincere and genuine and I will do my best to convince my family to give you a chance.

    God bless you.

Mr. Osborne is as Real as it gets when it comes to a Man of the Soil and I can respect him for coming out and talking about His Truth. So Kudo's to him for that! Many of you DON'T have to believe him AND will use this forum to disrespect & try to discredit his Many ccontributions to Our Beloved BVI, BUT be forewarned, tread lightly.

He is Not the first and certainly won't be the Last to bare the brunt of the weight by an opposing ruling government party, but this should only affirm to him, and others, JUST HOW STRONG YOU ARE! I KNOW FOR A FACT a Very Promising & Intellectual Young Woman, who graduated top 6 in 2001 and DID NOT receive a scholarship due to the fact that her family were VIP supporters. Discouraged from her denied scholarship requests, she successfully sought a public sector job and was given the opportunity to attend HLSCC years later, where she not only passed but was awarded top student. And to think NDP Was the ruling party at the time.

At that same time, another young woman from another high school graduated (not valedictorian or salutatorian) BUT RECIEVED a FULL scholarship to ANY SCHOOL of her choice. And why? She was rumored to be sleeping with a married man- a Politician in OFFICE at that time.

A lot of things BOTH parties do/did is wrong- allocating jobs to family's companies and giving public sector positions to family & friends- just to name the main things. And in this day and age where information is at the fingertips and NOTHING can be covered up so easily , I thought these practices were a thing of the past, but old habits are certainly hard to break I see. A lot of locals are moving abroad not only because the opportunities are better, but because more than a few are being forced out, to seek employment opportunities elsewhere. But WE must enforce the change though . I'm not saying all NDP Representatives or VIP Representatives are innocent, but all aren't guilty. Before going to the polls, we need to listen intently to EVERYBODY'S proposals and vote accordingly. Forget parties. Think INDIVIDUALS. When we eradicate these practices (voting for a COMPLETE party because it's a "family tradition ") and thus, alleviate OUR GOVERNMENT of some of these wilful, mean and old men (who needs to retire), then and only THEN will we see change. There's so much promise in young people like Mr. Osborne, who has fought for so long for so many people and for the betterment of the BVI community as a whole that WE need to put the older ones into retirement so we can see change and let change begin to heal old wounds. It's time for these men to choose a successor & pass the torch OR be voted into Retirement so other brothers and sisters of the BVI can come Home. When they run them out, they're discouraging them from wanting to continue to fight for the unity and equality of US.

HOLD ON MI GENTE... CHANGE IS COMING!

So i guess government was supposed to give you that 400,000.00 for you to start your business because you want it. I guess everybody that comes off the street with a business plan should be given what they want just like that. Theres a lot to this story that he is not saying.......
