PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI - The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) it is pleased to announce its new initiative –The Assistive Technology Programme, which allows businesses to donate to the institution.

According to a press release on the initiative, having moved to enhance the learning experience of its students, HLSCC launched its “Going Digital” campaign this Fall semester with e-book platform Cengage Unlimited, Office 365 applications, EBSCOHost, as well as several other digital resources.

This new programme is meant to ensure that students are not placed at a disadvantage due to financial hardship. As the College strives to provide high-quality education, coupled with the desire to keep up with ever-changing technology and community needs, it has embraced the use of electronic tablets and other devices to assist with the learning experience in and out of the classroom.

The College also realises that not everyone will be able to afford devices which will enable them to adequately benefit from the e-learning platforms on and off-campus. The Assistive Technology Programme was developed to address this sensitive issue some students, unfortunately, contend with. Eligible students who are interested in receiving one of the donated devices are required to complete an application form at the Student Success Centre on campus.

Insurance company NAGICO, who has assisted the College in the past on various initiatives, did not hesitate to donate 10 Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 tablets.

According to Shaquilla Smith, NAGICO’s Assistant Manager “once we were approached to support the programme we quickly agreed to provide the tablets which are a crucial component to ensure the success of the College’s plans.

We are always keen to support educational initiatives, especially those that enhance the experience of students, lecturers, and the overall institution.” One of the British Virgin Islands’ network providers CCT, donated 10 Logic T10B tablets.

CCT’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Averad Penn said, “we are thrilled to be a part of this initiative to enhance the learning experience while making learning more affordable for students.”

Another local insurance company, Alphonso Warner Insurance Agency (AWIA), lent their support to the programme by donating 3 Samsung Tab A tablets. Myanna Prevost, office manager indicated that “we at AWIA are pleased to be able to ensure, through the HLSCC, that higher learning is more affordable and accessible to the BVI Community and our donation will assist in aiding 3 students by providing them with unlimited digital access to the online learning platform.”

The faculty, staff, and students at the HLSCC are appreciative of the donation from the three companies. Vice President of HLSCC, Dr Richard Georges, in expressing his gratitude to the donors said that, “in striving to provide a 21st-century learning experience to our students and to provide the best teaching tools to our instructors, we understand that we have to push past many obstacles, including financial ones.

We are extremely grateful to our partners for supporting the overall digital initiative, but even more so, opening the door for several students to take advantage of these new opportunities at HLSCC.”
