ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio Talk Show host Edmund G. Maduro has decried what he described as discrimination against local establishments which are being made to close earlier than some others owned by foreigners.

He was speaking on his EGM Show heard on Thursday February 26, 2015 on ZROD 103.7FM between the hours of 8:00 and 9:00PM.

“Hours of closing down is another way in which our bars are being discriminated against. Our local bars are being made to close at 9:00 and 12:00 at night while other bars which sometimes call themselves clubs could go up to 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 or 6:00 o’clock in the morning,” he said.

“The Constitution speaks out strongly against this type of discrimination but our leaders are still allowing it to happen in spite of the fact that I have spoken and am still speaking of that type of discrimination,” he said.

“Yes I agree that some of our bars make too much noise because of the location in which they are situated to the extent that it is very difficult for the people within the area to go to sleep etc.,” he said.

Police Public Relations Officer Diane Drayton was contacted for a comment on this issue; however, by post time this morning her response had not been received.

Maduro also cited the rate of the delivery of justice as another way persons are discriminated against. “Some of us will be tried in five seconds while some of us will take years to be tried. The law said that we must always be tried speedily for the sake of justice and that we are innocent until someone can prove us guilty,” he said.

“My question tonight is this: will our elected representatives correct all these abusive wrongs before the next elections? Are they going to wait until the day before the elections to correct them? Ladies and gentleman, the Constitution should never be allowed to be breached and that is one of the major responsibilities of the Governor and our elected representatives,” said Maduro.

This is an antiquated law that needs to be review.
The Bars should close at 12 am weekdays and 2 am on weekend.
These laws were designed for a different era 50 years ado.
